My 2014 West catalog came this week. It is about 50 pages larger than the 2013. I encourage all of you to get a copy and thumb though it- even if you do not need anything. Use it as a reference book for all the West Advisor information there is. Alot of questions that pop up on this forum could be answered by looking up whatever part you want, or what knowledge you need on a given subject.

I have to admit that whenever I'm buying anything over $50.00, I always refer to the WM catalogue for a price reference and then see where I can buy the same item cheaper, often MUCH cheaper eg. Defender Marine, Genuinedealz, McMaster-Carr etc. And this allows for shipping as well.

A new throne sitting dream book....must be getting old... in my younger days it was a copy of playboy...oh well.

If you really were old, you would have said the Sears, Roebuck & Co catalog. Three inches thick, and it had everything in it!

I was recently asked to help check out the electrical system on a friend's friend's boat that was going to Hawaii. After some discussion, I asked if they had "their" copy of the WM catalog aboard, so we could look something up and I could show them a picture. The wife said: "You know, so many people asked us that, so we finally went out and got one."

I have two, one at home and one on the boat.

And, again, their Advisors, as well as answers on this and other forums, are very valuable sources of information. I answer a LOT of questions with links to the WM Advisor website. Sometimes, if you look there first, the answers are apparent. Things that are more complicated, like "How does my fresh water plumbing system work?" are all there.

And, the price is right! :):):)

So true...... we should have a rule here that telling someone to google their question does not qualify as a response. In fact, googling the problem is probably how they found this forum in the first place... now... I said that and then I can say that I'm probably guilty of doing it myself in the past... what I will do now is google it for them ... then pass on what I found... to get them down the road to a solution.

If however, you respond to someone's query with "have you tried googling it" you are a lazy, bandwidth wasting troll. I mean you could literally answer every question with a "try google" reference so what's the point.

I am no longer allowed to keep catalog on board because I run passengers and crew off sometimes crying. My boat went thru that 20 yr maintaince nightmare where it seemed like everything wanted to break on somebody constantly usually me but sometimes while others were using and I would ( not to be mean ) pull out the catalog to see how much that was gonna cost me. Well that would really make some people feel lousy ( again I didn't want to be mean ) I just wanted to know .

The point is that many owners do not even bother to try to locate equipment manuals until something breaks- then they post a hurry-up question asking where can they get a manual. Nor do they read these forums unless they have a probelm, otherwise they would have seen recent threads on the very subject. If they do not say that they have/have not. googled, then the first reply is entitled to do do. The questions are taking up my time, and though I help when I can, I will not google for them because the OP did not.

As I said when I started this thread, if people would do their research first, then a good number of questions would never be posted in the first place. There are enough bonified qustions that we can help with, that we do not need those that waste our time- and our bandwidth- and then the OP is the lazy, bandwidth wasting troll.

If you chose to do the work for others that others will not do for themselves, then good on ya'. Not to get religious, but they say the lord helps those who help themselves.

Searches and Stuff

Yup, I can't disagree. Joe, I hear ya, but sometimes a simple Google search will not only get them here, but get them a blinkin' answer. In the past week, I've done a few searches in answers to questions both here and on other forums, and was amazed that the answer to their question came right up! :doh: I believe some think that a sailboat answer needs to be researched on a sailboat forum. Heck ACE Hardware is my favorite sailboat store now. ;)

I provide links when I can, and have actually developed some "101 Topics" including Maine Sail's contributions, because so many questions (perhaps unknown to original posters) are repetitive.

URL, instead of trying to place complicated electrical issues, for example, in the Catalina 22 section because they're thinking of getting a 30 or 34 or 36, it would help a lot.

Systems are not necessarily "boat-specific."

And read yesterday's news: I can't begin to tell ya how many items come up on Tuesday and then Wednesday someone asks the same question. Forums aren't always there just to pop a question, they should be a community, where folks can say: "Heck, didn't ya read as we went along this week?"

I may be sorry for this post, but I've been a proponent of "doing homework and research", got "nailed" for it years ago, and made up my own series of links to continue to help to avoid re-typing a lot of stuff. I didn't make up my own website like Maine Sail did, 'cuz when I croak at least it'll still be on the C34 website! :eek:

Not only that, but what other boat equipment site has "The Boat Babe"?

Speaking of the West Marine catalog, be careful about throwing out all the old catalogs because they don't have EVERYTHING in the catalog and sometimes, especially for older items, they can be found in the older catalogs. How do I know? One of the salesmen told me that when I was looking for an old part.

Can't believe how long we've had our boat. Got her brand new just about this time and sailed her on her maiden voyage from Seattle to Poulsbo on a nasty winter day that was cold, drizzly, and against a southerly. Maybe I should say Happy Birthday to her. *sniff*
