Hi folks!

This will be a long one...

As posted earlier, my wife and I picked up an '82 27' in need of some love and attention down here on Lake Norman in NC.

She's still in the boat yard, getting bottom paint and a few other things done ( including the Cutlass Bearing...did I say that right?). I'm pretty excited, and have several silly questions if you don't mind.

First, a comment...she isn't perfect, but after researching this site and having the boat inspected; i picked her up primarily because the "right" things were wrong with her. A few leaking hatches with broken dogs on the center hatch, some bad running rigging, cheesy Greg Brady era fuzzy interior furniture, etc...but no soft spots in the deck or below the waterline...and just one on the port side between the aft two hatches.

Here are my "newbie" questions...and keep in mind that I'm asking these BEFORE learning what the heck I'm doing.

1: On the deck to hull seam, which was the only source of any interior leaks, I recaulked and resealed the toe rail B/C most of the caulk was missing and/ or chewed up. However, the actual bolts running through the toe rail and the deck flange are pretty loose. How tight SHOULD they be?

2: Dumb rigging questions: it looks like the boom doesn't have a boom vang...? I see that the sheets are attached mid boom, and have a pretty significant mechanical system, does this preclude a boom vang somehow?? Also, there is an internal steel cord inside the boom, that's completely slack, and I can't quite tell where it runs. Topping lift adjustment? Any input that you guys can give to help shed some light on the factory rigging to change sail shape would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance, stay warm!

Hi Jim,

I have an '82 Hunter 27 that I love. I am slowly working through it between sailing. I basically sail it, and say I am working on it! The fuel gauge on mine is way under the Nav desk/pilot berth. I think it is original. As for the Boom, I have three lines led through mine. The toppling lift control, a reef control and the outhaul which is the cable purchase you talked about. I can see if I have a pic of the topping lift someplace, I think I posted it once before. The toe rail bolts on mine are loose, I read that many people try to snug them up every season, I have not done it yet. I would think they wouldn't be overly tight since it will force out the sealant.

You will love the boat, it is very stable and a great weekender!

The toe rail bolts should be tight. Someone in an earlier post wrote to snug them from the bottom nut end only trying not to turn the bolt as that may break any seal that is already in place. Others with similar metal toe rails have after tightening the bolts have laid a bead of 5200 along the toe rail to seal out more water. They told me that this sealing with the bead of 5200 finally stopped the leakage. I have not done this but would like to. Another item on the list.
