The new H33.

I have been showing the H33 at the Cleveland show. It is an interesting comparison, the Henderson designed H33 sits right next to last years H326(picture). The cockpit is smaller but the seats are wider. The transom step is about 10” where the 326 is 20”. There is 6” between the table and companionway step, 18” on the 326. The helm seat cannot fold down as a step, has to be stowed somewhere. The cockpit is straight, not round, so you need to hang the wheel somewhere. All of this plus another 10” of beam makes the interior MUCH larger. And the beam is carried both further forward and further aft. Funny story, this is boat #11. It was ordered at Annapolis withOUT one of those new front-loading refrigerators. The marina owner thought the whole counter area would be a top-loading icebox and they would add a “normal” A/B cold plate and compressor. Turns out the icebox is a little hole in the back corner, actually smaller than the waste basket next to the sink. The rest of that aft counter has a nice cabinet under it. I liked the secondary winches at the helm. There are two jib tracks so you can sheet the jib on the cabin top if you prefer(or think you can sail 30 points off the wind). I like the more traditional cockpit even though it is tight. Lots of storage space under the settees even though the hot water tank(port) and battery boxes(strbrd) are under there. Also like that they framed those big portlights. There is a solar vent as well which, I think, is the only dorade. The v-berth is nice size with a chair to port and a sizeable closet on starboard. Nice storage in galley area but only a shelve along the hull over the settees. Built-in microwave is nice. Very good engine access with the large ladder box pulled away. And seemingly well insulated. There also are small hatches to the engine, starboard and aft. I did not like only two opening ports, one over stove and one in the head. There is an opening hull port and an overhead hatch(under the strbrd cockpit seat) in the aft cabin. Just one hatch in the v-berth. I prefer a two-hole sink and a separate shower. The head has one of those faucets on a hose. The hose is too short and you have to hold the shower head, no hook for hands free washing. The table is on two sturdy fixed columns and without fiddles. There must be two short columns for making the table into a berth because there were latches on the bottom of the table and on the settee. I never found the shorter posts because the cushions were very difficult to lift and get under. I’ll post some additional pictures in the Photo Forum.

Design change

Ed- I was told that after hull #16 the helm seat would revert back to the flip-over design. They also revised the size of the top-loading ice box to make it a little larger. The original box was for dry storage. They are offering a refer option to include the front-loading refer w/out freezer section and a coldplate on a second compressor for the icebox (can be set for frig or freeze). To my knowledge there are no short posts for the table - it is just supported by 3 sides of the bench. There is no fiddle for the table because it would get in the way of converting it to a bed? Hull #1 had the starboard opening port in the aft cabin and no ventilation in the head. They said they added a dorade vent to the head - can you confirm? Thanks, Barry Bear Necessity

Good changes.

Those would be welcome changes if true Barry. I'll check out that table to bed idea later today. And yes, there is a solar vent for the head but I think that portlight also opens(see picture). You can almost make out the second jib track in the picture.

Head Vent

Ed- Thanks for the picture. This is the first photo of a change since hull #1. Please check the portlight in the head. I don't believe it opens, but this could be another change. This also shows that Hunter is listening to customer feedback. Barry bear Necessity

H33 Vent.

You are right Barry, the opening port is aft of the head and in the aft cabin. Amazing what I can forget during the 60 minute drive home! That chrome vent is right in the middle of the head and I could not see how it worked. I think we sold #11 but will not know for sure until the weekend.

Pictures in Photo Forum.

As promised I posted the rest of my H33 pictures in the Photo Forum. As much as I like this boat I would look for another $25K from the bank. Directly across from this boat is the H36!

Great H33 feature.

Every night I discover something new on this boat. At the foot of the ladder is a well, about two foot square and seven inches deep. There you will find five thru-hulls, all heavy-duty with big bronze ball-valves AND a little black plastic label for each! Lift one panel and clearly see the status of all thru-hulls, pretty amazing. Still no seacocks though. :(

Ed - keep looking

This boat has lots of good little "surprises". The location of the thru-hulls (grouped together) was actually one of the selling points for me. Even the A/C valve is in that central location. My last boat had valves scattered all over. It would have taken me 5 minutes to check all of them in an emergency. Can't wait to get mine. Unfortunately, I had to cancel our trip to the factory to see her being built - business trip got in the way. Barry Bear Necessity

H33

Barry, I finally got to see the 33 up close in AC this past weekend. I took note of the grouping of the through hulls myself. Being able to spend a decent amount of time on board has really convinced me that I bought the right boat. I can't wait for the spring. John Marrotta

Speaking of the factory.

Greg Emerson stopped by last night in his new role as "sales guy". I told him we would miss him on the phone. He said the place is in good hands. I think he was going to Chicago next. I hope to get to the factory in March. Have heard a lot of stories so I need to see it for myself. On the H33 I found a lot of extra space around and under the wastebasket. But that same big void under the icebox seems to be inaccessible. Or is that where they enlarged the icebox?

New H33

We ordered our 33 just before the Toronto Boat Show and had a second chance to have a really good look at the show. Al Patterson and the folks at Angus Yachts have been great. They have a 33 in the yard at their new location that you can go have a look at if you missed the show or want a second look. The 33 has so much more room than our 290 and the Glen Henderson design should make for some really fun sailing. One thing the admiral pointed out, however, was that there were no drawers in the galley if you order the oven. We are going to have to get creative to store the cutlery and utensils. Anyone have any ideas? We are also thinking more opening ports would be a definite asset for ventilation on those hot, humid summer days.....sorry, I drifted off for a minute. This is going to be a very long winter. Doug and Jo S/V Squee's Play

where is the ventilation

the boat has virtually no bloody ports. very little ventilation in the main cabin. Why doesnt hunter make the two large forward windows, hatches that open. besides that, nice boat

Lack of. . .

galley space and ventilation is an issue. There is a very large void under/around the wastebasket if you can find a way to use it. There is the cubby hole over the ladder. There is some under the sink(which should be replaced with a 2-holer). I thought there must be a lot of space under that little icebox but Greg Emerson says no, that there is a lot of wiring and plumbing in there. And I see no way to get into that. I would start looking by pulling the frig out. Greg had no answer for the question about the portlights. I do know from experience(I have eleven openers) that most of your ventilation comes through the hatches. We use a large exhaust fan in the companionway that swings out of the way. BTW we sold our H33 last night. Also an H44, the H41, two H306s, and one Hanse 311. Pretty sure the H386 will go. Only the H326 and H36 were not spoken for. Greg says the H41 is outselling everything. A fun week.

Movin' on up...

Well, we're doing it too. Moving up to the new 33 from our 290 - signed the contract a few weeks ago (thanks John from NJ). Was seriously considering the B-331. Liked it a lot, but the 33 was a better fit for us, and the boss liked the brighter interior of the 33. A LOT more room than the 290, and lots of great features that we don't have now. Minor differences such as lack of drawer space and opening salon ports were noticed, as you guys mentioned, but I think they can be worked around. Can't wait until spring!
