That's a Catalina?

As someone who loves a Catalina, I have to say it's butt ugly inside and out. Send it back to the drawing board!

Wow

Wow! she is different, but ugly? I disagree. So far the publicity people have not added such practical nautical items as hor d'oevres trays, candles and flowers so we are seeing pictures of a raw interior. I see a salon table with fiddles, an aft berth that can be used as a sea berth, lots of seating, a bosuns locker with access to a huge lazarette (but walking in the locker looks tricky - I think a false floor is needed), a very comfortable, if stark, forward state room, a galley my daughter would love in her town apartment, and dare we hope for an engine under the cabin sole with lots of access. I would like to have spotted more cupboard around the galley, is that fridge a proprietary fridge?, or catalina's usual does not quite work contraption. Not a boat for marina hopping perhaps, but hopefully a real passage maker. I am just glad I have bought my 350 so It is too late to think of finding the money for this one. I think Catalina have got the boat of the year.

Bill, Did you go to the Annapolis boat show ?

And see it there? I haven't seen it yet. I have heard that its not that bad and looks much better in the water especially compared to its line drawings. Its actually considered a "Morgan 44 DS" and I have been told its more reminiscent of the older Morgan O/I of old days that plied the Caribbean charter service for years. They all have that "look" . A bit big and squatty, which I know most people don't expect from Catalina. IMHO, its difficult to make a Deck Salon look really good and also open and set up well down below, especially with a boat under 50 feet (same thing with center cockpits) I think the Tartan 44 Deck Salon is pretty unattractive with those huge square windows. Even the best rendition of a 40 something Deck Salon (IMHO) is the Jenneau 43DS and its still not really pretty at all angles. Its not perfect, but it can look pretty good most of the time. Well designed dodgers and canvas can help the lines of a boat also. I will reserve judgement until I see one in person.

DS44

We went the show this past Saturday and saw the new 44. WOW!...it's Big and filled with lots of goodies. The other Big thing is the price. Since I know I can't afford it...I didn't even ask. It's got to be well over $300k

I see one listed on Yachtworld for $285k

See link below -- Not sure if that price is negotiable or what they come with . Also not sure if that comes with dealer prep or if it includes shipping. Are these made in Fl or Ca ? The coast where they are made will be cheaper by a few grand due to shipping. Damn just a few years ago the jenneau 43DS was starting at ~ $235 now they are even up around $275 -- Prices on all these boats just keep going up !?!

i have owned a catalina 30, 36, and now a 380. i live aboard and love the boat. i agree with the other poster that this is one ugly boat. i also would hate to have to change the water pump impeller with the engine in a hole like that.....what are they thinkin' ??? rt

As I said.........................

I said it before and I'll say it again, that is one ugly ass boat. I thought nothing could be uglier than one of Hunter's center cockpit boats but alas, I was wrong. Catalina better check the ventilation at their plant cause I think some of those fiberglass fumes are leakin into the design studio. The folks at Hunter and Jeanneau must be rollin on the floor. I could see using it for agricultural pest control though; set one out in a field and the bugs will take one look at it and die laughing. If I sound a bit over the top it's because I hold Catalina in such high esteem and for them to put out something like that is treasonable to me.............I just feel let down that they settled for such mediocrity. At least I'll have something to bitch about once Bush is gone(and in prison)!
