I just saw an ad for the new Catalina 22 Sport model in Mainsheet magazine, February 2004 issue. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this new C-22 model. From the ad I gather that Catalina is introducing this as a light weight version that will be more competitive against the early light weight boats as opposed to the current heavier boats that are more cruising oriented. I am most interested in discovering if there is an improved method for hanging the keel that eliminates some of the current problems, such as the bolts breaking off in the weldments.

Not much inforation available . . .

The 22 Sport that you refer to is not even posted on the Catalina Yacht web site. I did find something on a dealers web site. It talked about this boat being the size and weight of the original 22. (The mark 2 is wider than the original). Sounds like they are dusting off the old hull tooling. You could email Catalina Yachts to see if they can answer your question. Regards, Ted

Thank you Ted

At this point, I think your suggestion about a dealer's site is probably the best place to go. I hope there will be technical drawings available, especially for keel work.

Before you run out and buy one to race

A point that needs to made is that Catalina Yachts builds boats. Period. They do not make the racing/measuring rules for the C22 fleets. Just because it says Catalina 22 on it doesn't guarantee that it can be raced everywhere. In order for this new boat to even compete in sactioned races, it must pass muster with the C22 National Sailing Association. Remember what happened with the Mark II fin keel? However, if it truly has the same configurations as the old originals that are competing, I don't see how they could expell it.
