I know these come up about every six months but here is one with a twist...

Its a riddle....

I think it would be cool to name my next boat

Nantes' Promise

Now who here gets the reference...

Hint: It is a nod to a famous pirate ship.

If you got a cleaver boat name with a twist... share it.

I think I get the Nante thing, but I'll let the guesses play out a bit.

But I'll add a name of my own: "ASITHIS". Would have named my current boat this, but my boat partner didn't like it so we named her Wind Rose. But some day I will own an ASITHIS. Any guesses?

There is a Latin word close to that "aisthesis" that sort of means "an awareness of sensation". Is that what you were going for? Is this a more modern latin-based word?

For a sailboat that would be a cool name.

rgranger, nothing quite so urbane as Latin, but thanks for pointing that out. Now I like the word even more!

If we need a PHD in Literature to understand a name it is probably not good. Whatever happened to the old standards, like Summer Breeze, Sunseeker, etc?

I'm working on this. I still haven't figured out the meaning but it's a nod to Queen Anne's Revenge. Arrrggggghhh!

rgranger may not hold a PhD but he is a professor of chemistry. I get what you're saying, Benny, but I love a good mystery!

OK, wasn't the Queen Ann's Revenge originally a freighter named "Nantes" or some such thing before Blackbeard took it over for his nefarious purposes?

Regarding ASITHIS, you don't need a PhD to figure it out, you just need to see the picture hanging on the bulkhead, and read the old sailors quote written on it.

Yes that is it. The original name of the boat was La Concorde de Nantes. It was originally a slave ship. In 1717 Thatch (Blackbeard) captured the boat and renamed it.

I do hold a Ph.D. but not in language. I just happen to have a close friend who is a professor of Latin and he is always talking about the origin of words. It is quite interesting once you start parsing out a word.

Oops. My bad! I looked you up on the college website. I figured they would brag on your PhD if you had one. *blush*

Don't matter... if I could do it all over again, I think I'd just go sailing... :D

I named my first boat, "Tiller I'll Be Late". The boat was sort-of the final wedge that ended my first marriage 15 years ago. Originally, I was going to name her "Tiller I'm not coming home". Hee-Hee!

Regarding ASITHIS, I suppose the complete boat name should also include BTNWSABF, but that just doesn't roll off the tongue nicely.
