I think it's time to replace it. I'd like to follow Peggy's recommendation and use the Raritan PHII, but it's too big. The head compartment is laid out with a small raised platform (about 4") for the head itself. This makes using anything with a seat height much greater than the HF's 12.44" very questionable. With the platform, this becomes about 16-1/2" which is just about right. Also, the compartment is very small and wider deeper heads are going to make a crowded situation even worse. So, here's the question: How good is the HF and would just replacing it with a new one be worthwhile? I've done a lot of looking, but there's very few alternatives that are compact enough. BTW: It's a 1986 Cal 28-2. -Smitty

The PHC is the same pump, but on a compact base to fit a tighter space...it should fit if the PH II doesn't. The Groco HF is an ok toilet--certainly a LOT better than the Jabsco and somewhat better than the W-C Headmate. The Raritan Compact II is the best of the compacts if the PHC won't fit. I like the HF because it is so simple and easy to work on. I have had good luck getting parts thru WestMarine, without buying the complete rebuild kit. Replacing the head will require drilling new mount holes.

I can't find a place to buy the PHC

PHC is not being replaced by the Compact II; they're two completely separate products. It is basically a Raritan PHII, without all the horns and whistles - you could call it PHII-Lite. It is a little less wide, but has the exact same pump and pumping capacity as the PHII, but without the fancy lower base cover, and it has no provision to be converted to electric operation at a later date. It is strictly a manual toilet. The Compact II is Raritan's bottom-of-the-line basic manual toilet, originally intended to go directly up against the popular (with boatbuilders, read: cheap) Jabsco manual toilet. However Jabsco was too firmly entrenched, and the Compact II, to date, hasn't made much of an inroad with the OEM's. Nothing wrong with it, it just didn't catch on with the boat builders.

Carpentry skills in the head.
Smitty, I fit a PH-II in my boat by a little carpentry and starboard. The problem I had was I did not have a deep enough platform to mount the PH-II in the place the Jabsco unit used to be. I constructed a mounting plate out of starboard - attached the head to the mounting plate with countersunk stainless from the bottom and then attached the mounting plate to the raised section from the top. The new mounting plate now extends past the origonal raised platform a little bit. The head is secure and was a fix to my problems concerning fit. Maybe this may work for you??

It's entirely possible that I've "sold" every one 'em that you personally haven't, either online or at a boat show...'cuz there are no other sources of information about it anywhere. You and I seem to be the only people online or at any boat stores who know it exists! Even the link to it in the boatfix.com catalog that you posted doesn't mention it anywhere except the price list.
