The fore hatch leaks

Has anyone been able to modify the fore hatch so it is
watertight? I would like to keep the original but suspect it it would
be simpler, and more certain of success, to replace it with an after
market one. The Lewmar hatches look solid.

I removed the hatch, straightened the hinges and replaced the seal
with off-the-shelf weatherstripping about ten years ago. We have not
had a problem since. We've had lots of water over the deck too, not
just rain either.

I'm surprised by your question; as we've had Spring Fever for eight years and despite some rough windard work have never seen even a drip from the forehatch.

Is the foam seal-tape of good-quality (say 1/4"thick) and in good order? That's a point - do you actually have a foam seal on the underside of the hatch to seal it against the deck upstand; if not, fit one?

We've only had Bella for less than a year, but I also had a problem with the fore hatch seal.
I also used some weather stripping from Home Depot. Although, I noticed the same stuff
from West Marine for 25% more.

Also, be careful when cleaning out the old stuff. Clean it from the deck straight away. In
extreme heat, it can melt to the deck. This is not a problem with the seal on the hatch, as
it is used fairly often (at least once a week). But the little chunks on deck are a total pain
to clean up.
