Boat Choice

Remember all boats are compromise, and most will perform far better than their owners do in a pinch. Also remember people tend to recommend what they own. We costal cruise, first in Brsitol 24, then Catalina 30 now new Beneteau 331. All survived our mistakes and weather. Bristol actually had to survive the worst weather, 40 - 50 k wind in open ocean in Noreaster. We did fine. I was convinced full keel and heavy was way to go. Catalina convinced me different for coastal cruising. Beneteau has taught me that almost plumb bows, long waterline equal more speed and more distance in comfort on vacations. Finally, try buying new. With in mast furling and all modern equipment. Get good canvas work including California Dodger and bimini with connector. Makes the rainy days more pleasant.

Ford/Chevy Analogy

Someone used the very apt analogy of Ford vs Chevy etc. Just as with most production cars, which particular example of boat you select might be more important than the actual brand. None of the production boats are ideal - but they are mostly all adequate. (See "In praise of the Coastal Boat") I’m one of the “anchor snobs”, so perhaps my bias is showing; but I’d much prefer a Bristol “Benehuntalina” (a disparaging term for Beneteau, Hunter, & Catalina) than a “mangy” premium boat. While a thorough professional survey is essential, there are many simple “pre-survey” observations you can make yourself. Some of the conditions that would eliminate a boat from my further consideration: 1. Poorly designed &/or executed DIY “improvements” or repairs. 2. Obvious structural damage. 3. Obvious lack of maintenance - dirty/burnt oil, rusty bilge, etc. 4 etc... I think that your extensive powerboat experience should provide a basis for excluding many boats from further consideration. The basic issues are similar. Boats that are common in your area might hold their value better, and be easier to re-sell. At least you'll have a local fund of specific knowledge and opinion to draw upon. Good luck! Gord
