Yesturday evening after inserting the new keel pin through the new bushing and ataching the new winch cable, I tightened the last new keel bolt. it is one of the most satisfying moments of my life. What a feeling of accomplishment. If it were not for this site - I would never have done it. Thanks for all the advice, information, help, and " teds sailing page ".

Keep repair

Bob, I felt the same way when I finished my keel. It's nice to have total confidence in your boat and it's mechanisms when you're on the water too. Did you add the spacer pads to your keel? It's a nice improvement in that it totally eliminates any clunking due to the keel moving around assuming you've eliminated the space between the keel and the hangars. Catalina Direct sells the two pad kit with epoxy. It's very easy to install without having to lower the keel from it's hangars. I recommend it highly.

Keel cable turning device?

Hi Bob & Dave: My previous response to keel maintenance on a 1980 C22 was titled "Home made Keel Pin". I repaired mine in 1990 & am asking for information on a keel cable turning device to prevent cable chaffing where it exits the hull. I recently saw mention of this item in "Ted's Sailing Page". I know I don't have such a thing. It this thingy standard equipment? I checked my cable & it has no damage. Regards, Bob B.

turning device

when I removed the keel I noticed the turning ball was missing and the cable had worn agroves in the front of the brass pipe. I ordered a new turning ball from Catalina Direct. With the boat out of the water you remove the clamps and hose and it fits in the brass tube. I installed a new winch cable at the same time as mine had some kinks in it.

Turning device...

Bob, Yes, the "turning ball" should be there. Your boat should have had one when it left the factory. Catalina Direct carries all the parts you'll need. The only thing of concern is whether the brass pipe is still solidly attached to the hull. This pipe is concealed by the rubber hose attached to the "volcano" (where the keel cable comes up through to the winch). The top of this pipe is where the ball gets installed. Here are the parts listed in my 22 handbook for the ball and pin: Turning Ball: D2020 $11.50 Turning Ball Pin: D2029 $ 2.50 You might even be able to install the ball without removing the cable. Don't try it with the boat in the water though! Just throw it on the trailer, loosen the hose clamp, pull the hose up to expose the top of the pipe and then install the ball. The top of the pipe has a hole drilled through it for the pin. Once the pin goes through the pipe (and the ball inside the pipe), the black hose actually holds the pin in place. Make sure the cable goes down on the aft side of the ball! Otherwise adding the ball won't change a thing in your case. I've added a picture to show where the ball is located and how the cable is routed around it. Note: The ball will be up higher in the pipe than what this picture shows.

Re: Turning device...

Bob, By the way, I thought I had the same problem that you do when I first bought my boat. I thought the ball was missing because I could see the chaffing on the hull from the cable. It turned out that the previous owner must have replaced the ball and/or the cable and routed the cable in front of it rather than aft of it. So the cable wasn't even touching the ball. Fortunately, the previous owner never lowered the keel. Hardly any damage. I replaced the cable right away and routed the new one correctly. I guess my point is that maybe your boat has the ball, but the cable is routed incorrectly. If your boat is on the trailer, it should be easy to check for it before buying any parts. However, if you don't know how old your cable is, or you know that it's fairly old, you may want to at least replace that as preventative maintenance. Dave

Keel cable turning ball again.

Thanks for the response Dave & Bob. When I repaired my keel etc in 1990, I had no information on this. I do remember being concerned with keel cable chaffing where it goes down through the volcano if the winch & cable were not aligned with the hole. So I installed a thin wall brass bushing in the volcano & a new cable. I thought the brass would be easier on the cable also help to center the cable in the hole. It had no turning ball. My boat is in the water now so cannot check this out until next fall. I did check the cable by unwrapping it from the winch drum & it is as good as new. I also looked under & all looks good. I did not remove the large rubber hose. The picture that you posted is great info. It shows the turning ball to be well below the hose that is clamped to the volcano. Regards, Bob B.

Re: Keel cable turning ball again

Bob, The ball isn't quite as low as the picture illistrates. It should be somewhere near where the clamps are on the hose. Maybe even a little above that.
