Bob,By the way, I thought I had the same problem that you do when I first bought my boat. I thought the ball was missing because I could see the chaffing on the hull from the cable. It turned out that the previous owner must have replaced the ball and/or the cable and routed the cable in front of it rather than aft of it. So the cable wasn't even touching the ball. Fortunately, the previous owner never lowered the keel. Hardly any damage. I replaced the cable right away and routed the new one correctly. I guess my point is that maybe your boat has the ball, but the cable is routed incorrectly. If your boat is on the trailer, it should be easy to check for it before buying any parts. However, if you don't know how old your cable is, or you know that it's fairly old, you may want to at least replace that as preventative maintenance.Dave
