The expanding bunk on the old Hunter 30

Yep, it's a 78 model, Cherubini of course.

There is no evidence that there was ever any fold out, slide out, pull out bunk kind of a deal on the port settee.

The table folds down off the bulkhead of course.

Now what? Any ideas folks?

I have the 77. I didn't even realize I had one till I joined the forum and heard people talking about it. The way mine is built on the starboard birth there is a front that looks like a stained two by four. Of the table is up you can pull on the board. In my case a piece of ply was attached to it and just slid out. Not sure if it needs a leg or legs as I have never used it but it was there. If I go aboard next weekend I can take some pictures if you'd like.

Settee Bunk

On my old 1980 H30 there was indeed an fold out bunk on the port settee. Under the cushion was a full length panel, maybe 3/4" thick, that would fold out to form the bunk. It was secured along its length by a long piano hinge. The forward edge rested on a support that ran athwartship across the bulkhead under the fold down table. There was also a fold out support near the aft end of the bunk.

My 1980 H30 is as John describes. There's a foldout under the port cushion that converts the bunk from a single to a very narrow double (really only comfortable for one.) The back cushion from the starboard side bunk fits over the port side foldout.

Not sure why anyone would have removed the foldout - it doesn't interfere with anything. Wouldn't be that hard to retrofit either.

On my 78 the port settee has a slide out instead of a hinge with a fold out support at the stern and a slide groove on the bulkhead. I don't have my camera this time for a pic.

In one of the pictures in "Owners Mods" you can see the forward support. It is mounted on the bulkhead of course. Can't be seen in John's picture because of the table.

Was aboard yesterday, unfortunately weather changes not to mention by cabin leaks has made the wood swell so I was unable to shift the slide. I may attempt a drawing or try again in a few weeks and I begin to tackle the leaks etc and hopefully can get the slide unstuck.

Having been the actual designer of the interior of the 1st-gen H30 I deliberately did NOT specify any pull-out double berth at the time. What I drew was a pilot berth with a narrow transom berth which pulled out about 6-8" to become a nominal 27" or so in width. I do believe some earlier ('74-'77) boats were built like this; but Hunter eventually went to some kind of pull-out double in lieu of the pilot-and-transom arrangement.

I still say my idea was better; as I was going for decent sea berths and the original plans provided three of them.

Most people prefer the 26"-wide quarter berths I drew for the Cherubini 44 'C-plan' as good sea berths over the wide starboard-side double as well. I suppose my priorities have always been for sailboats actually SAILING; and I apologize to all who believe such a mentality narrows their own choices.

Interesting Diana, thank you for that and your work. We just LOVE the interior in our boat (78 30). You done good.

We find no evidence that our boat ever had any sort of pull out deal.

We're still up in the air.
