I was out in the area of Winter Cove British Columbia Canada last weekend and witnessed the sad death of the Robertson II, a 130 foot wooden sailboat from Victoria British Columbia. Somehow in the night on Saturday they struck Minx Reef at the entrance to Winter Cove. The vessel is a training ship for the underpriveleged in our world. Seems that a miracle will be needed to get her off the reef without severe damage. The Canadian Coastguard have a pollution warning out and there was diesel leaking in the water on Sunday morning. Sad event on Canada's 140th birthday.

Sobering

Scenes like this are sobering. As Capt Ron says"it could happen to anyone". Truth is, no matter how good a skipper is, everyone makes mistakes and sometimes a small mistake has big results.

How sad!!

It's my understanding that her days as a SALT Training Vessel had ended and she was in the hands of a private owner.

It's sad to see one of these glorious old boats go down. They are magnificent reminders of days gone by. Fewer and fewer of them are left for us to admire.

More on the Robertson II

Here is a little more about the history and current status of the vessel. Your comments and expressions of sympathy would be appreciated by the owners I am sure. The duct-tape comment would not be. One in every crowd.

Boats in worse straits have been saved

Save the Robbie, whatever it takes. Cut the shrouds and let the spars float on their own. Don't let Transport Canada drag her off the reef and turn it into splinters. You can do it!!

It's better to burn out than fade away

The boat has been abandoned, I would advise anyone in the area to grab some tools and salvage whatever you can before it gets dragged to the bottom of the ocean by the government. A great finale for a fine ship, going out in a blaze of glory.

Robertson II being raised this week

The owner of The Robbie, Roy Beudreau has had support from all over the world. At present a salvage boat and operation capable of refloating her are set up. They expect to start on Thursday the 12th.
