When the 72's hit the water I was beyond impressed with the boats, the speed and the pure power. Not so much with the racing. Although amazingly fast it was the first boat over the start line typically won the race, The more I watched the more I was dumbfounded by foiling upwind, driving around marks at 15 plus knots, creating your won wind and just plain speed.

I wrote Oracle off at the start in the second race yesterday and hung my head in disbelief when they burried the bow at the first mark. Man was I surprised to see them scream ahead when NZ hesitated for a split second. Todays race should be a lot of fun to watch. In my opinion there is nothing more exciting in sport than a 7th game of the stanley cup finals going into overtime. This last race is a close contender.

A ride on one a 72 just went on top of my bucket list. Wherever, whenever and at most any cost.

I still like the "old" style match racing and would prefer to see that for the Americas Cup. The new cup standards are not true to the original Deed of Gift but they are sure fun to see.

I was at AC Park yesterday to watch the two races. PHE-NOM-IN-AL!!!!!!!!!!

Tons of tactics, boathandling, etc. all taking place at 30+ knots. Just don't blink or you'll miss it. ETNZ hit 55 mph yesterday, and came in 2nd...

Don't bother even trying to avoid the spoilers. Leave work, download the AC app on your Android, iPhone, IPad, whatever... Watch it live!!!

Yesterday - Wednesday 9/25 - was fantastic!

Living in northern California, I was lucky enough to physically be on the Marina Green (near mark 1), the jetty (point nearest the finish line) and by the Golden Gate Yacht club for a couple OTUSA loses early on. It was great to be there in person, but I found I was looking at my iPhone 5 and its real-time LiveLine data for the excellent information and graphics showing what you cannot "see" from shore.

So I opted to watch the penultimate race at home in front of my big screen with all that excellent Stan Honey technology overlaid on the perfect waters of San Francisco Bay for the finale that fit into my extended lunch hour on the west coast. I invited a half dozen of my yacht club racers over and we pulled the pizza out of the oven just as the boats entered the start box.

It was far superior to quickly know what was happening via TV coverage and LiveLine information versus being there, but nothing compares to actually seeing and hearing those behemoths foiling around Mark 1 at 40+ knots and zipping by you close enough to hear the wind in the rigging and that squeal of the mainsheet being let out followed by "trim" pulling it back in - constant adjusting!

Amazing racing, amazing improvements, amazing drama (can they actually make this comeback complete?), amazing television, and amazing technology all around!

So how long do we have to wait to witness such sailing again: 2016? sooner? later?

Well this year proved a few things that gave much food for thought - I hope they find a way to lower the cost so there is more competition next time. Maybe back to the smaller cats and foil them?? I hope they continue with the pregame races like the ones last summer, in the smaller boats, up in Newport I believe? They need to keep doing that if they want to turn this into a bigger event that gets the attn. of even the non sailors.

I don't have cable and just keep in touch with the world with my car radio and CNN MSNBC & Fox on the internet - I only saw one mention of the race late yesterday on MSNBC, just one!!

Unreal - we come back 8 straight races to WIN and no one even make mention of it until 24 hours later!

The race was started on my commute home, grabbed my headphones, streamed the live coverage using the AC app on my phone... I couldn't watch obviously but the wife did while I listened.

MY GOSH that was a HUGE lead!

I can't believe I LISTENED LIVE to a sports event... and was happy to have the audio (the video was pathetic, until my 4G snapped back in - in my driveway).

Sailing NAIL BITER THERE.. for 7 freaking races!

I loved the technology and the access. I watched live on YouTube for the AC45WS as they raced in Europe, RI and CA and fell in love with Stan Honey's tools that show all that data, especially the 'lead line' and speeds. Plus the mics and cameras put you practically on board with the sailors.

Then the Louis Vuitton series was also available on YouTube live, plus the Americas Cup app on my iPhone provided VirtualEye where I could pick my own camera angles and what data to display.

But when the AC Finals came around, NBC Sports Channel took over and no more live YouTube - but still could access the LiveLine data online and replay the video hours later.

So for the big race Wednesday (race day 19, race 19; the winner-take-all race), I watched NBCSports Channel live on my big screen at home with a bunch of my sail club buddies sharing pizza, chips and dips and watched the LiveLine data on the iPad screen. The LiveLine was about 10 seconds earlier than the broadcast, so we knew the cross would put Oracle ahead before it was shown on TV!

Like I said previously, I can hardly wait for AC35. In fact, I am finding I cannot stop watching replays (now available from YouTube http://www.youtube.com/user/AmericasCup [click on Race 19 for the clincher]) and I sync up the "historical" race 19 on VirtualEye (http://americascup.virtualeye.tv/) with the YouTube and watch side-by-side picking the datat and angle I want for precise details to match the video replay.

I think it may take more than a couple days to come down from this AC addiction...

Maybe mainstream media didn't give it national exposure, but you could have watched live on the AC app or NBCSports.com. And all the races are on YouTube for replay, in HD no less.

Jimmy Spithill was on The Tonight Show last night after there was a skit about Trending Tweets that went one step further, predicting Trends. The last one was that Oracle Team USA skipper Jimmy Spithill would do a "spit take" on the show, then Jimmy came out, was congratulated by Jay Leno then they drank champagne and Jimmy Spit Taked.

Yes the AC 2013 regatta was spectacular. It still amazes me that these boats are doing in excess of 40 kts downwind, upper 20's upwind. Ain't it great living in a time when this is possible? With a sailboat? Un friggin believable! The chase boats were running balls out just to keep up.

I'm not ready to trade in my keel boat just yet but I sure do view those Hobie Cats in a different light. Time to do some flyin' ...
