The cycle of life

When Bly Berken and I launched this site in 1996, Amazon was a fledgling bookstore, Bill Clinton did not have sex with that woman, and 68% of people said they would *never* send their credit card number over the internet (turned out they had a point).

Since then, across all our sites we've logged 3 million forum posts, registered 153,000 users, and shipped 156,000 orders. That's a pretty good run for a small business and I am beyond happy that it's well-positioned for another successful 25 years.

However, SBO's future will unfold without me, as the time has come to step down.

A bout with Covid, cancer treatments, and age have made it difficult to write code and it's put a dent in my writing, too. Those have been my primary contributions to the site for the past 5 years and the SBO team deserves better support than I can now provide. I also think I might have one more start-up left in me, something a little slower and simpler. :)

SBO is in good hands; hands that I trust. Al has owned the organization for 5 years now and has brought many positive changes to the site. With the business in Florida, he has lots of potential employees with sailboat building experience at Hunter, Catalina, et al, and lots of manufacturers who work in the marine business. That's good news for the site and for sailboat owners everywhere.

I've met so many amazing people through SBO: Peggie, Jim Bohart, Rodd Collins, Brian D, Don Guillette, Jim Seamans, Rick Dinon, Gary Wyngarden, John Hadley, and a hundred others. I will definitely be back now and then to check in on things.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this site, some of you from its first days. I don't have the words to describe how much it has meant to me to see this dream take flight and actually do a little bit of good in the world.

I'll be seein' ya here soon... but next time, as a civilian!

Phil

Thank you Phil, for everything you have done - with this site, for the sailing community, and in nurturing a neighborhood where camaraderie and helpfulness are the principal themes. That is quite the legacy.

A boatload of Thanks to you Phil. The advice, the help, the support from members far & near, but above everything, thanks for the many years of providing an avenue to create friendship with folks I would never had had a chance to get in touch with were it not for this site. That is priceless and I for one am so appreciative of the work and efforts you put in it to keep it going. And I'm thoroughly convinced that it was far more than the desire to make the business a success that kept you going all these years. Best of everything to you. And please do chime in from time to time wherever your ''one more start-up left in me, something a little slower and simpler'' takes you.

Phil- It has been a pleasure and a wonderful experience being a small part of SBO. Thanks to you I have met many wonderful sailors and learned much from them. You have truly created the best sailing site on the 'net.
I wish you the very best in all your future endeavors. I am confident that you will excel in all you attempt.

Thanks for everything! This small world always means a lot to me. I think everybody can say that they are truly glad for your start up nearly 3 decades ago. Enjoy your time for yourself!

Thanks for everything, Phil. You've allowed many of us to help each other out, learn something new every day and make new friends, both online and in real life. What more can anyone ask? All the best to you & yours.

Thank you, Phil, for setting up SBO so that we can continue 'messing about in boats', even when we're not on board. Your example will certainly help the site hold course for a long time.

I am a relative new comer here, only two years on the forum, but I have to say Phil you have done an amazing thing to bring the world together and build a site that is so useful to so many of us around the world. God bless, and fair winds and following seas! Dano

Remember one thing, Phil. Life is not worth very much without purpose. It helps keep you young at heart and the strength and spirit to go on.
