The continuing saga..... (Cirrus)

Hi all, I have been home for a couple of weeks now and Cirrus is still in the yard at Porto Santo but she has a new owner! I put her on Ebay just to see what would happen and I was amazed to be inundated with inquiries and to cut a long story short she has been sold to a really nice guy who came along and paid my reserve price in cash. I guess he has got a bargain but I was delighted to get a fair price considering where she is! That is the bad news...........

The good news is that I shall still be crossing the Atlantic this Christmas with a guy I met in Spain in another little yacht called a Vancouver. Anyone ever sailed one?

Strangely enough he is just motoring into Porto Santo marina as I type - he rang me about 10 mins ago - his steering system has broken and he will be borrowing the one off Cirrus. (with the new owners permission!) and he will also be picking up some of my personal stuff - so a result all round! I shall be meeting him in La Palma (Canary Islands) and then heading west for the Caribbean.

I had a good long think before I sold Cirrus but the bottom line was that I hate sailing alone and I could not find a crew to go across the Atlantic so it seemed silly to hang on to her.

This way I still get to do what I set off to do and have the benefit of some company along the way.

Oh - my apologies for not updating the blog thing - I have been away with my long suffering wife in the caravan - (wonderful way to travel :)-60 mph, no banging of heads, no rocking and rolling, and nothing broke!).... I shall make a real effort to get it all typed up asap.

I am feeling much better about the whole "adventure" now and not feeling like it was too much of a failure. I guess I needed to try it before I could discover my limits - one thing I do know is that long distance solo sailing is not for me!

I guy I met in Spain (Benjy, www.ventspleen.com) who has lived on his Pacific Seacraft most of his life kept telling me that "the universe will conspire to help me" - it looks like it has - much to my amazement!

I guess an Albin Vega forum is not the place for posts about a Vancouver yacht so I shall (sadly) have to refrain! My thanks to all who have helped with advice and kind words - it was much appreciated.

Regards to all.

John

Hi John - strangely enough my wife wants to visit the place where the
quiet man was filmed so we may just fly into Cork soon! It would be
great to catch up...

Good luck in the Vancouver, John, and thanks for firing us all up. Please send a URL for any continuing blog you keep of your future voyaging.

Beowulf is in a spell of not going wrong ( hope I don't regret those words, and we have a chance to enjoy the good life in Portugal. When the winds return and become favourable we will be on past the Algarve and on to the Bay of. Cadiz. Off for a swim! Tom

Thanks Tom, I have just booked the flight to Tenerife - an amazing ?60
with Easyjet! I will arrive on the 3rd of Dec and set off across the
Atlantic sometime before Xmas. I will probably just continue with the
blog at ...
.... although I need to get it up to date. Enjoy your swim and good
luck with the rest of the voyage.

By the way - the traffic separation zone around Cadiz was VERY
busy.... I ended up going across it at night and boy was I kept
busy! Maybe you will keep inside it?

Hi John,
I hope you have a grerat voyage. I look forward to your posts.
The Vancouver 27 has a stellar reputation. Here is a brief review:
Never sailed one, but always look at them when they come through this way.

John,

You might want to try and find "Winter in Fireland", recently
published. Written by Canadian Nicholas Coghlan. It's the account of
the he and his wife's sailing of a Vancouver 27 from South Africa to
South America and around the horn. It's a great read. It should be
mentioned, as well, that this is the same couple that owned and
circumnavigated the Albin Vega, "Targa the Otter" out of Victoria,
British Columbia.

I think both yachts have similar characteristics? I shall have a
chance to compare them soon. I hope the vancouver sails as well asa
Vega although I believe it is twice the weight so it may be a bit
sluggish. Good news is that the engine is in top condition so I will
not have to be repairing that all the time! No doubt there will be
other stuff.

Hi John, There was a Vancouver 27 in my old marina. I was very impressed with it and hate to say it, thought it was a better boat than mine. We buddy boated with a few other boats on our way to Mexico. Folks going the same way just kind of hook up. We met Willie on a Vancouver 25 out of Vancouver, British Columbia on our way down. He was single handing and a most capable sailor. After Mexico he kept going and finally burned out somewhere around Greece. Sold the boat and moved ashore. The thing I remember most about his boat was the head was on tracks and would slide up under the forepeak. You could then use the space as a shower. We were envious! Walt, S/V Lyric #120

Hi! Yes - I am growing very fond of this old boat.... I have to say it is so much more "substantial" than a Vega and all the fittings are first class. The loo in this one is in the normal position but I think it is not the normal arrangement. I will reserve judgement until I have sailed it (we are leaving for Cape Verde on Saturday) but so far I am very impressed.
Take care

John
