The bilge ...

Has ANYONE ever had their bilge pump go off in the 240? Am I just so lucky yo have a constantly dry bilge that I never have seen/heard the pump working (unless I swith it to manual just to remind me it's there). The bilge seems like one of, if not, the driest spots in the boat (without the pump's help). Has anyone used this space for storage of anything? Any clever ideas (besides a mushroom farm)? Just curious.

SOGGY STORAGE

Iwent to my boat Sunday and found about 30 gallons of water on board. The bilge pump on my boat is manual. I thought it was automatic- it will be soon. The pump sits on top of the ballast tank, which is not a low spot. The storage bins under the quarter berths are the low spot, including the bow storage. I talked to Hunter today and they told me the water could be coming in through the motor mounts or the rudder grudeons. I will have to haul the boat, pull those bolts, fill the holes woth caulk and put everything back together. My boat was tied to the dock with the stern getting the most wave action. Plan to turn it around.

Knock on wood....

...our bilge pump has not kicked on in three years...and the bilge (knock, knock) continues to be dry. Every so often I check to make sure the pump is working... good sailing Bill Welsch s/v Renewal

I have a 23.5 and for the past three years, I have keep in a slip. Never had any water in the bilge. I do check the pump on a regular basis.

Ditto Dry

I have been (Knock on fiberglass) high and dry with my 98 240. The only time I get any water in the boat is when I over fill my way water tank, DUH!!!!! I also check the pump form time to time.

Dry as a Bone

I owned a '93 23.4 (I was the original owner) until a few months ago. The bilge was always dry but I did check the bilge pump occasionally (don't run it dry for more than a few seconds). I used the area for storage i.e. place dirty clothing in a trash bag, extra lines, etc. Bruce.

Uh oh look out though

I too had an always dry bilge. I had lots of things stored forward under the V berth and under the settees. I was on a long trip down the ICW and after crossing a large open windy sound with large waves, got the the marina and found a bilge full of water. I still to this day don't know were this water came from and have never again had the problem. I would suggest placing a pump at the forward end of the boat because it is a very low point. I was also told the pump is on top of the ballast tank to keep it raised a bit so trash will stay out of it. Russell sv Summer Luvin'

Hey Russel

I too, sometimes find fantom water after a rough ride. Some say check under the rub rail where the 2 halfs are sealed. Others say the sink drain may have a venturi effect and suck back water when the boat is significantly heeled on the port. I have found by sliding the top of the companion way cover towards the cockpit, that I stay dry below even on rough windy days. The spray had been flying over the bow and occasionally landing in the cabin. Joe R.

23.5 dry as can be

We've had our 23.5 since we bought it new in 1994. Not a drop in the bilge. We keep in in the water year round in the great Pacific Northwe(s)t. If we were going to get water below decks, it would be here. Dave R - where do you have your boat in the water? Cougar Pride is in West Bay Marina.
