The Admiral today asked for a new Main Halyard

The Admiral wants a new Main halyard that doesn't kink when the sail is being lowered. Most questions on halyards revolve around low stretch but I'm interested in a type of line that doesn't get stuck at the clutch when the sail is being dropped.

Key question: How do you coil it?
Watch this YouTube video. He talks specifically about halyards starting at 6:15 in the video. If you don’t do it like he says that is THE cause of your problem. You can untwist the line by towing it behind the boat for a few miles. Before towing it should be knot free (even the end) and the end should be whipped or taped to prevent unravelling.

Take a look at NER VPC. It is a blended rope with a low stretch core and polyester cover.

If the halyard runs to the cockpit, toss the line down into other cabin before releasing the halyard and let it run through your hands as it goes out. This will take out any of the hockles (kinks) before they jam up some where.

If you use a winch to raise the sail, it is the winch causing the issue. After winching up, you need to remove the twist from the line by coiling in the opposite direction it was on the winch for the first 4-5 coils, and work the twist to the end before lowering the sail.

This is a good idea. The line is always straighten before releasing but not coiled in the opposite direction.

I think I'll try some new VPC since it's on sale now.

VPC is good low stretch line for your halyard application. The hand feel is sometimes a complaint.
