Winds gusting to 45 knots tonight, waves up to 10 feet, temperature dropping to the mid 30's. That's it. We're done. Sigh.

Here Too

We are hoping to get another week of sailing in before we call quits,we never know what NOV will be like, warm or cold. A few years back I sailed in Nov and it was great but another year we got an early snow. I did get a lot more sailing this past season since I retired so it doesn't seem to hurt ending the season. I'll be going down to Florida this winter and spending most of the winter in a warmer climate and not have to deal with the ice and snow here. Nick

Today may be it for the season ...

The sun is out and it is a beautiful fall day with a stiff NW breeze. We'll sail today and take her over to the marina where she winters. If they don't take her out this week, we may be able to sail next weekend. It is supposed to stay warm and the lake level is still high!

Warren,

You're a sick puppy :) Your picture looks so cold it makes me shiver... Get a full enclosure or head South BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE! ps... I only sail where my deck crew can dress properly

David, sounds like perfect weather

If Environment Canada was forecasting mid 30's for today I would have been out in Georgian Bay in my shorts ;D ;D Or were you refering to the British system they still use south of the border ;) I was up today to do the last "tucking in" and actually drove up through hail and saw hail/snow on the ground *yks. She was hauled out this past Tues.... looked very sad sitting in the cradle and not in the water. :( Oh well, only 2 1/2 months to the Toronto Boat Show and the 3 months to Launch !! ;D ;D ;D

Took my last sail today *cry

Took Free Spirit to its winter home for a haul out next week and it was a great last sail with 15 to 25 for about 9 miles. Then spent the rest of the day putting antifreeze into the water systems and head then putting all the summer stuff away till next season, the one thing we do is take a lot of stuff and food off the boat and get it ready for a RV trip to floida in December so one pleasure door closes and another opens till January when it gets real cold and I start getting cabin fever. I guess I'll have to play with my new sailing site and play dock the boat. Thank you Higgs

One More Week

I started winterizing today. The wind was really kicking ass today. I am planning on getting some sailing in this coming week weather permitting of course. Nick

Sailing season is over for me too!!

Its over for me too. Took a short sail and out she went. Sad day. All last winter I thought about all the pictures and video that I was going to shoot and post. Forgot the camera about 90% of the time, but have a good collage. Hopefully I can put some stuff together for you guys. I really enjoyed what Dick Dixon did last year with his archive. Hopefully some other people have the same ideas too. I think it was greatly appreciated by all of us on the hard. Rob Hessenius

Then we kicked ourselves the first week of the year when it was in the mid-60's. Not this year! I will sail on NY Day! This seaon will not end! I will not let it! Jack,

Before I found the yard that hauls me for the winter I would leave my boat in year round and short haul every 2 years for paint and wax and I remember three years ago on New Years day the temps were 55+ and I was out there having a blast, My sailing club has a race every year on NY day and then the boats are hauled. I've been traveling to Fla. in Dec. every year so for now I haul for piece of mind.

Great Weekend in N Alabama

We went up a little late on Saturday and sailed until near dark. Good winds pleasant temperatures. The Marina was full of transients from places like Ohio. Sunday was another good day but the winds were a little stronger. For the gusts we really needed a reef but kept on sailing without a reef. Probably the fasted the boat has sailed this year. A little cool sleeping on board without heat but still comfortable in our sleeping bags. The leaves are turning but the forests are still mostly green. Wheeler lake is oriented east -west and the winds were out of the north. Sunday we sailed about 10 miles on one tack and then had to change tacks to get back to the dock. I love those days that require few tacks.

Realism

I took the sails off my boat yesterday and made her ready for winter. I know I will miss sailing over the winter; it will be at least 6 long months before I get back in my boat here in Connecticut. However, I feel better about the yearly layup than I used to. I used to fight the end, sailing in cold weather, dodging the marina's phone calls, seeking to know when I was going to pull the boat for the winter. I have since come to the conclusion that as much as I love sailing, I don't really enjoy sailing solo in the cold weather (no one would ever come with me), and I have plenty of other enjoyable things to do in the fall and winter, including daydreaming about the coming spring. So now, come the end of October, Indian summer or not, the boat comes out of the water.

Nick,

I leave on the 14th of Dec and return about New Years day and the first week will be spent at Fort Wilderness @ Disney then we head for the Keys and camp out at John Pennekamp state park in Key Largo and then Sebastian Inlet State Park in Melbourn and a few other side trips along the way then heading back north about the 30th of Dec. Where are you?
