Listen to Music.

I just found the best Sailing CD Ive ever heard. It includes songs from Eric Stone, Kelly McGuire, Sunny Jim etc. It’s a really great combo of great singers and sailing songs. I truly think every sailboat should have a copy on board. You can get a copy at http://www.boatsongs.com Thanks, Will Hurle

star gazing & chess

If you're using a laptop for navigation programs there are lots of options to exploit among them star gazing, chess, or the latest DVD. "Starry night" is a great program that pictures the night sky in your area for identification of all those stars planets and meteor showers but that's a clear night activity. Chess is a great computer game if the rest of the crew is reading, and everyone enjoys a movie on DVD.

no wind sailing

In Idaho we can only sail in the spring summer and fall. After 9-11-02 the dam where my wife and I go play and walk the dogs will be closed during fall and winter and will open the 15th of May. A spin off effect of the tragedy in NYC USA. It is a "federal dam". So now we sail there from the other end of the lake and use the giant empty parking lot for down hill skate boarding as the parking lot and boat ramp run together, I am 45 and not exactly in shape enough to push a skateboard along like a child so slightly down hill is just right. Later in the summer when the water is warmer and temp is up we resort to water play, swimming etc.etc. Though it be ever so far from the tragic loss of life, terrorism has affected the sailing and rereation way out here in Idaho. God Bless America! and You.

The most peaceful time...

...is when I'm in bed on the boat and the rain is falling. I just feel so secure.

Watching big powerboats anchor

That's got to be the most entertaining thing to do in an anchorage! The skipper's increasing agitation as the hook repeatedly fails to set is usually proportional to the size and/or flashiness of his boat, the difference in age between the skipper and the (only) female passenger and the number of gold chains around the skipper's neck. A fellow sailor once commented, "Powerboats must REALLY cost a lot. That's probably why their owners can't afford the extra $50 to learn how to run 'em properly." Peter H23 "Raven"

Staring at the A-4 or scuba

We like to go sailing with our neighbors who have a 36-foot S. African blue-water boat. (Think secure raft-up.) Neighbors and my wife are both scuba divers. If it's nasty on the deck, it can't be much wetter than below, so they like to scuba dive and snorkel to watch the lobsters and pick up unfortunate boaters' anchors and fishing gear that they have left behind. As for me, I find myself staring endlessly at the Atomic 4, wondering why it doesn't work when I want, and why it quits when I need it, thinking of haiku and Atomic-4 angst. COMPUTERS ARE FUN, TOO!

Although reading is my number one past-time on those days when crew is not to be found, I also enjoy writing in my log/boat journal. This happens to be on my laptop - where I have many other programs to occupy my time as well.

The eternal project boat

We have purchased the ultimate project boat that will keep us from idle time for many months to come. No mast. No sails. No working engine. No real equipment of which to speak. The Mastless Wonder will keep us occupied through any stormy days to come!

To Phil of Eliot,

If your A4 is a source of frustration to you, you might try the "A4 List" on Sailnet. It has provided me with many answers to problems I have had and helped me to avoid several brewing problems. It is a valuable source of info and has de-mystified the A4 considerably for me. As to the question at hand... I do like many of you, use the rainy day as an opportunity to find/track down leaks, and do general maintenance until the sun comes back out. If the day ever comes when none is needed/required then I will probably study may sail trim manual. However, the Sex, Booze, Food option sounds pretty appealing too ;) Regards, Lysle
