That dreaded phone call...

So often at Smith Mt. Lake and elsewhere I saw cheap lines that either broke or was going to break and retie boats without anyone knowing. Rob, even at SML I have been caught in near hurricane strength winds on the lake. Suggest that you always have yacht braid style dock lines with spring lines when gone for a long time. I even have suggested mooring whips even for SML but if not make sure the fenders on the side of the boat facing the dock are secure

Yep! From now on...
I had two lines on the bow and stern... and felt that was overkill. Mother nature is a stern teacher in deed.

Only the stern line was set up as a spring line because of the need to tie to a floating dock. And that is the one that held. The line was 3/8th. I might go with 1/2 from now on but the 3/8 fits under the cleat. So I will have to play with it and see what I can come up with.

I am going to be pulling the boat soon so I can bring her home and make her ready for a big trip to Pamlico...I've managed to sail her about once a week so far since February. The main sail is definitely past its prime. I don't like where I see the pocket in the sail.

When I next put her in the water at SML I will have an entirely new approach to securing her. I took the O.B. to Hold Fast Marine yesterday and Josh is going to put it right for me. I got lucky! The engine cowling is now scratched up a bit but other than that.... I think that will be the only permanent reminder.

My headsail unfurled. I get a call from Marriott Marina. I'm in Kauai visiting G-Kids. Marina or Hotel wont lift a finger for "Liability" reasons.... By the time I get someone there, my sail is shreaded.
They are misinformed about "liability". If they knowingly avoided helping in the marina you are berthed, they are liable (exception loss of life/limb). I gave my Mariana written permission to do what they could. They know where I keep extras lines.
Leave them for poor service.
Jim...

PS: Even Wally mart is liable for their free parking lot.

I can probably handle it but I'd love to go sailing with you some afternoon and I always find help very helpful :)

I can usually get away from work on Wednesdays but I don't have a working O.B. at the moment so it might have to wait a few weeks.

I do not believe this is correct. If they do not have a staff member with some kind of qualifications to do something like this, then they are best to call a professional. If they were to send an unqualified person and that person was injured, both the hotel (marina) and the owner become liable.
No marina is duty bound to care for equipment on their premises. Life and limb, surely, but not otherwise.
"Even Wally mart is liable for their free parking lot", Not hardly! Someone runs into your car in their lot, they say, "Not our responsibility.", and it is so posted EVERYWHERE around that lot.

No, but it's a great excuse to make a buck!
If a severe storm was imminent, my old marina would secure any boats they didn't feel were secured well enough. That allowed them to charge for thick dockline by the foot and about 1/2 hour of labor to tie it all up.

And once they touch the boat, THEY become 100% responsible for the boat.
Unfortunately, I do not believe good Samaritan laws apply to pleasure craft, especially when you are charging for the service.

I disagree. I looked at my old contract. (Very fine print of course). Paraphrasing, it says the owner needs to provide adequate docklines. Furthermore, it says, that any obligation not performed by the boat owner may be performed by the marina at the owners cost and expense. It has nothing to do with being a good samaritan.

Sorry but that is to scare YOU. Those signs are worthless. Not wanting to hijack the thread.
At my marina, the attendants HELP!

That is the best way to protest... take your money someplace where they are glad to be in partnership with you.

That phrase has been in every marina contract I've seen. It has been common practice for marinas to inspect, evaluate and attend to any safety concerns with regard to preparation for a storm. They really have to since one boats ill preparation can affect other vessels. Yes, they probably acquire liability in doing so but they probably had liability anyway.

By all means take him up on his offer. I don't call him Uncle Crazy Dave for nothin'. You'll be friends forever.
