Recently I had to renew my boat insurance. I am with Progressive with liability /medical/towing, only. I noticed a premium charge for uninsured boater. It was almost 36 % of the total premium cost. Is this worth having coverage for? I am new to this sport and would appreciate knowing the opinions of the more seasoned sailors. Thanks in advance for your ideas on this. John

Yes

I happened to be anchored of Anclote key the other day. An idiot on a jet ski ran at high speed into a boat at the beach I'll bet he didn't have insurance on the jet ski.

Maybe

Uninsured or underinsured boater coverage covers you for MEDICAL COSTS you may suffer in connection with a boating accident where the other party is at fault. Whether you need it depends on what other medical coverage you have. Un/under insured boater does NOT cover your boat itself. Here's what Progessive has to say about this coverage.
