I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I have just obtained my wet slip for this season. The marina fees are very affordable and the dept is okay (I was there on the lowest low tide of the month and I had enough depth to get in and out). I am okay with the slip, considering that the other slips left at the marina were extremely narrow. The only small issue that I see is that there is a security light that is right by my slip. That is a good thing when I am not on the boat, but if I decide to spend the night on the boat while in the slip it will be very annoying. I am use to sleeping in the country (Very little light). I usually pull into my slips, for privacy, so that would mean if I have my front hatch open I will have light shining right on me. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to block out this light? I would like to be able to open my hatches and get ventilation. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Forgot to mention

I fogot to mention that my boat is only 22 feet long. The air conditioning route is one that I might look at....but I am still debating that....Don't think that I will go with a fixed unit and I don't want to pay the $ for cruise and carry types....I have a spare window unit that I could modify to fit in the companionway hatch if I desired, but that is just one more thing to store when I am running out of room to store stuff.

We unscrew the bulb...

at my marina. Similar situation, right over my and a neighbor's boat. Owner replaces it, we climb up and unscrew it.

I travel for work Monday to Friday. Living in hotels, I and often have the same problem. I bought a mask (sleeping eye cover)at Walgreens for around $5.00. It works so well I now use it every night.

Switch

Ask the marina operator if you can install a switch and turn if off when you are aboard.Owners on board are probably better security than any light.

Find the Breaker

In college I was on a water skiing team. We would practice at 0600 on Saturday mornings. We developed a fool proof method of being there on time we would close the bar and sleep on the dock. The first couple of times we had the same problem with the lights but we found the breaker and always had a good nights sleep after that.

Put up a shade

You would want the security when you aren't there. The slip is wider, and has more draft than the other slips available. Yopu only have a problem when you over night on your boat in the slip, nad only when you open the forward hatch for ventilation. So.................... Can't you rig up some type of shade to keep the light from shining into your forward hatch? I am thinking that a very cheap blue tarp, about 4' x6' bungeed to the lifelines would suffice. In addition to keeping the light out, it would keep rain out too.
