I replaced my main halyard and topping lift yesterday using your paper clip and tape technique. Worked like a charm. Thanks!! Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

Can't find the tip

I'm interested in the "paper clip and tape" tip myself, but couldn't find it in the archives. What's the "paper clip and tape technique?" Thanks, Gary Kunkel Catalina 30 Folie-a-Deux

The Tip

Steve can probably describe it better, and I know it's buried in the archives somewhere, but basically it works like this: Cut the shackle end off your old halyard. Stick a partially unbent paper clip into the old halyard from the side so it won't pull out. Take the other end of the paper clip and secure it in a similar fashion to the cockpit end of the new halyard, butting the two halyards up end to end. (I acutally did this with twice with two paper clips, belt and suspenders.) Further secure the clips onto the halyards with tape (I used duct tape) so the paper clips won't fall out. Haul the old halyard up the mast through the sheave, back out the mast, through any blocks and back to the cockpit. The new halyard will follow along smoothly and you undo the splice. I think there's a picture of this in the archives as well. Maybe under changing halyards? Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

Alternative

Steve Dion is the smartest guy on this website, but I worry that the clip could come undone as it goes over the sheeves. I prefer to use fishing line, sewn in a criss cross so the bitter ends are flat but flexible.

You are welcome!

Gary: After doing it with the paper clip, don't you wonder why anyone would do it any other way. It is just as easy and just taping them together without the worry of them coming apart. Must easier and quicker than sewing them together and just as secure.

Works great

I discovered this same technique myself some years ago (should have patented it) and agree that it works great.
