About a month ago, I sent my aging and increasingly erratic '86 Datamarine Depth Sounder (S200DL) to DMI for repair. (Thanks to Stu Jackson for sending me pictures of how to remove the unit without breaking the bulkhead seal) Just got the unit back. Now, are you sitting down? For reasons I cannot fathom, the UPS delivery guy left the
box just inside my open garage. He could have put it a number of better places,
or knock on the door and deliver it to a person as I was home at the time.
Anyway.... a little while later my wife drives into the garage and hits/runs
over the box. Ouch. Fortunately, the unit was packed in a lot of elephant snot
and did not appear to be damaged, but the box was totaled. I called Steve at
DMI and he offered to test the unit for me at no charge if I sent it back. He
also said I could send it back in April after the boat is launched and the unit reinstalled and tested in the water. We then discussed how I could power up the unit at home as my boat is out of the water and the batteries are out. He said the LCD would read "E-1" with no transducer connected if all was well. I connected the unit to a 12 vdc battery and the "E-1" lit up on the LCD. Looks like the unit is ok. I was lucky... and also appreciate the helpful attitude of Steve and the folks at DMI.
