Hi Dave Several months ago you and several other kind folks advised me to do some checking before I automatically assumed my mastlight problem was the bulb. You were right. I did some testing with an inexpensive voltmeter I purchased and discovered that the bulbs were fine. the problem was, in fact, corrosion. The funny thing is I cleaned off the male ends and they were fine (arent we always?? Sorry ladies...)but I then rolled up tiny little scrolls of fine sandpaper and worked on the female ends and voila!!! This website is so cool and its great to have so many skilled folks ready to advise those of us who are further down the sailing expertise food chain. Although its not that hard to do, was glad I didnt have to lower the mast. Thanks again for the help Bill Welsch "Renewal"

Glad to Hear It

Seems like we all suspected that would be the problem. You are going to be amazed at how many things you will use your volt meter for. I replaced the conector on my boat as I thought the one that was supplied to be of poor quality.

Grease 'em

Now that the connections are all cleaned up, be sure to put a little no-ox grease on them. I need to to clean and protect all the sliding contacts in my boat before launching next week. That includes the slide-in tray for the stereo, the power-point socket, autopilot plug, and that troublesome mast lite connector. Thanks for jogging my memory! Ken S/V Wouff Hong

No ox grease?

Hey Ken, your suggestion about "no ox grease" sounds interesting, but I've never heard about it. Is that a brand name or a generic description or what. My mast light plug is a perpetual pain, and anything that could cut down on lost conductivity would be welcome. Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

Support George

George is absolutely right on the best grease to use. Dielectric compound will not conduct electricity, is great at inhibiting corrosion and will not damage plastics or gelcoats. This type of grease can also be purchased at nearly any electronics store. Radio Shack etc.

Don't forget auto parts stores

Us motor heads use it on spark plug wires as well
