Has anyone sailed south of Galveston and entered Matagorda Bay from the Gulf? There is an island - Bird Island - in the bay near the jetties that I would like to anchor at, on our way south- we have a Hunter 50 with deep draft.

It is now called Chester Island . Formerly Sundown Island. You are not allowed to go on the island.
We have been by many times from the Gulf.Through the Matagorda ship channel, both ways. And gone by on the ICW.
I really can't offer up any anchoring info for you.I do believe that any anchorages on the bay,are going to be far away from that island.
I don't know if you are familiar with that area. But don't get confused by the channel markers in the ICW.Use the north channel.

Thank you for the info, very useful. However, we weren't planning on going onto the island, just having a safe anchorage for the night on our way to Port Aransas.

Well take a look at the
Waterwayguide.com
Here's a screen shot of some anchorages.
So are you headed to Island Moorings?

No, we went to Island Moorings last year but barely made it in due to our 7 foot draft; we are staying at the City Harbor Marina this time.

I really appreciate the info. We ran aground last year in San Antonio Bay trying to cross. That channel is a joke: poorly marked, if at all, and too narrow.

Wow.....7' draft. Are you just trying to hop on the inside for nightly stops. I'm asking because I can't imagine doing the ditch with that draft.

I just did the ditch from Galveston to Rockport with a buddy boat (Tartan 41 with 6 1/2 draft). No problems.

Active Captain shows a couple of anchorages just inside the inlet to port. Should be good with the winds we have now. https://activecaptain.com/X.php

Thanks, Ralph. We have a Hunter 50 and tried to cross San Antonio Bay coming from Port O'Conner at night with no moon. We have good chart software, but that channel is too narrow; staying in the Gulf this time. Would like to anchor for the night in Matagorda Bay, not too far from the jetties. So, Chester island (once Bird) looks good as seen by Google Earth. Charts indicate its deep enough on the southeast side.

Yes. Just an overnight stop each way between Galveston and PA, then back out in the Gulf.

One more thing, have you ever been into Espiritu Santo Bay with your deep draft?
