My waste tank unit is no longer working. Before removing the sender I want to test the gauge. A store suggested I short circuit the sender and see if the gauge reads full. Is this correct? I will need to cut the wires as I see no obvious junction. The wires go straight into the sender housing.

Many thanks

Geoff

If it is Wema system go to the Wema web site and look at trouble shooting which will show how to test the gauge and seending unit and I just did it and the web site really helps checking things for the problem.

You may want to think about flushing your tank out with detergent and water. Let it sit for a day or so, or even take it out sailing. The detergent may help desolve the "stuff" that is causing the sender to fail.

A couple of cups of good detergent like Tide liquid should help clean out the tank.

Order one of the new WEMA stainless steel holding tank sending units, along with a new gauge. Check to be sure, but I'll bet your sender uses a three wire system, and the new WEMA senders and gauges are all two wire systems - a new sender won't work with the old gauge. If you have the three wire system, I'll bet there's no saving your existing sender. Hunter used an odd bellows type unit, and once the bellows goes, the sender is toast. The new unit from WEMA can be unscrewed and removed for cleaning. Go by Radio Shack and pick up a wiring harness quick disconnect and install it in the sender wiring so that you can just unclip the sender when you want to pull it for cleaning.
