I know that you don't need it

I use the standard xm antenna and have not had any problems at all.

Same here...

I would just suggest running a standard XM antenna in between the headliner and the deck. Keep it away from any metal hardware and you shoudln't have any problems. Fiberglass doesn't pose any problems for the signal on my boat... have never noticed any drop out.

Florida vs. New England

My understanding is that down in Florida the satellite is almost overhead, whereas up here in New England it is toward the southeast horizon, which makes antenna directivity more of a problem. Certainly I have to orient the antenna carefully to prevent drop-outs.

I have now had two of the Terk XM-5 marine XM radio antennas die on me for no apparent reason. It gives the dreaded "No Signal" message on the Sky-Fi receiver. It knows the antenna is connected, because when the plug is removed it gives a "No Antenna" message. Has anybody else had bad experiences with this antenna? Any other suggestions. I find the standard antenna is too directional when underway, with frequent dropouts. It's not the antenna as much as the time and effort it takes to install/replace it... Derek

xm antenna

ditto for us-we've actually mounted the standard xm antenna inside the nav station and it works fine. just avoid any large metal masses

Also installed a Terk because of drop-out

when standard was blocked by parts of the rig. Sorry to hear of a problem, how long did yours last?

Email Terk

One more thing... when I was trying to decide on what exactly to get for the boat, I emailed Terk directly and got immediate responses back... 4-5 emails back and forth. So definitely contact them for input... terksupport@terk.com
