Our 1982 H27 will need a tender to get the dog ashore for necessity and/or the wife and I ashore for whatever. The sailing area is the western half of Lake Erie. Has anyone found a tender/system that works especially well for this particular boat. Andy

Andy: You need and inflatable. Gettin' the dog in and out of the dink is not the easiest chore. We have a standard Schnauzer that weighs about 35#. She happens to like the boat but hates the water. We just have one of us stand in the dink and the other person hands her over to me. Stay away from PVC inflatables. They are not very resistant to abrasion. A good hypalon unit will serve you well. You can stand up in them without worrying about tipping it over. Depending on where you are going to tow it you can decide on a RIB or one of the soft bottom inflatables. The RIBs are heavy, but there are some new ones with a single ply hull which makes them OK. The best deal as far as easy of setup and take down is one with an inflatable floor.

We have the same boat and after looking at a lot of tenders I went for the Avon inflatable floor, ours is the 314 it is 10.4"and takes Tillie (60lbs) my wife and I with no problem We use a 6 hp Yamaha that planes the boat and is not so heavy to break my back (I also installed a davit for this purpose) we can tow it and we can roll it and put in the quarter berth or the lazarette and we can inflate it forward and lift from the deck with the spinnaker halyard. Now if you have an easy way to get Tillie back on the boat after she sucks 30 lbs of water on her fur I'll appreciate the input. Good luck Ed Tamara S/V Mastconfusion

I think Ed's reply is right on. How are you Andy? I feel like a soulmate, we were sailing with our Schnauzer(mini) but she was 15 and is gone now. But now we have the same issue with Ginger, a one year old Wire. Our old Avon has the plywood floor and is very stable but too heavy. I think an all inflatable gives you many more options because of it's lightness. I particularly like the idea of rolling it up for storage. We usually tow but I have also had it on deck and do not like the clutter and lack of visibility. Most of the time it sits in the long grass at the marina. I will add davits someday but I don't like them. And from reading about the safety aspects of an inflatable versus a hard dink there is no doubt in my mind that I would stay with an inflatable.

Doggie Life Preserver
Just finished talking to someone that puts his dog in one of those life preservers with the loop/handle on top. He uses it to lift the dog in and out of the water. Your could even use a Lifesling hoise off the boom to heave Fido up! (great practice!)

You guys all carry your dogs in inflatables? I have a real dog with claws
and that scared the heck out of me when he was in the inflatable. The wooden floor was OK. But when we got close to shore and he was in a hurry and used the tubes as a launching pad well... Same thing when he climbed into the inflatable from the water. That was enough for me to think about finding an old glass dinghy. David

You are absolutly right about their claws, mine is a Golden Retriever and I saw her claws last weekend when she was getting into the dinghy, From now on I'll make it a point to take her öwn" piece of outdoor carpet and lay it on her side when she is coming back or leaving the boat (the outdoor carpet is my own feeble attempt to have her go potty on my topsides, so far no success she holds it for over 24 hours wich makes me feel very bad) Ed S/V Mastconfusion
