Hi All, can anybody tell me what size dinghy I can go up to sensibly if I'm putting it on davits on the back of my Catalina 42. Does the weight effect handling speed etc, being stuck out the back. Is it OK to have it extending beyond the sides of the boat? I would like something more comfortable these days that doesn't involve twisting around to see where your going while getting your backside wet. Is there a formula for this?

There are many pararameters needed to fully answer your questions.
1-What do you intend to use the dink for, usual number of occupants, shuttling bicycles and gear, etc??
2-extending outside your max. beam is not ideal.
3-shock loading must be avoided (secure into davits well)
4-there will be some minor affect to handling and speed, but ton really noticeable
5-if there will be any 'real' seas on my journey, I remove the o/b prior to departure and tie the dink on deck, not in the davits.
6-Wsterly Oceanlord and have davits with extra supports ; the dink is an AB 9.2VL with a 15 hp Yamaha 4stroke o/b.( large tubes , fast and stable)

I have a set of Kato Davits aboard my 387. I think they are rated at 600 pounds. I use an inflatable that weighs 85 pounds, 10'5" and sometimes leave the motor mounted on the dink. I just draw it up tight and tie it to the davits to rid the dink of sway and make it a "solid mount" and it does fine when in rough conditions.

Thanks for the input. I also have davits of unknown origin but certainly look strong enough to carry a 10' semi-rigid dinghy. On the 42 the back stay runs all the way to the transom at the waterline making it easy to use as a hand hold when getting out of the water, but my concern is that it stops you from bringing the Dinghy up close to the back of the boat and also causes a chafe point for the dinghy when its slung. Has anybody looked at re-sighting the stay maybe by splitting it into 2 and attaching to the transom sides. Kind of like the 40 but further back and down the sides behind the dicky seats.
