Anybody got any good suggestions how to best to leave a tender on a swinging mooring so it doesn't become a obstacle when returning single handed .

I use a kayak instead of a tender to get to and from my dock. The kayak tracks better and I can pull it behind the boat when I sail.

Works for me.

Hello,

I have been using a mooring for 10 years now. I get to / from my boat with a 10' dinghy.

My procedure is as follows:
1. Long painter on dingy with a large brass clip tied about on about 15' ft from the dinghy bow.

2. Mooring pendant is about 10' long.

3. I have a mooring pick up stick that is on a 10' line too.

4. When I arrive at the boat I clip the dinghy pendant to the stern of the boat.

5. I climb aboard and get ready to depart.

6. The last thing I do is walk the dink forward, drop the pick up stick in the water, take one mooring line off, clip the dinghy painter to it and then drop on top of the pick up stick. I take the second mooring line off and drop that on the pick up stick, walk aft and sail or motor away from the mooring.

7. When I return to the mooring I approach up wind. If I have crew, one goes to the bow with a boat hook. I approach upwind, the person on the bow uses the hook to push the dinghy out of the way, then grabs the pick up stick, takes a mooring line and drops on the bow chock. Then the rest is simple. I'm single handing, I can do the same and run forward to grab the stick or if the wind is light I will approach the mooring at about 45 degrees to the wind. I aim right at the pick up stick and grab that. The dinghy will be 10' downwind so I don't worry about hitting it.

Good luck,
Barry

Same here.

Long poly double braid painter + bridal + when tied onto the mooring pennant gives plenty of room to get the bow to the second pennant with the pick-up stick clipped on. I'll come up from down wind keeping the dink to windward so the boat doesn't drift over it. The polypropylene double braid painter is important 'cause it floats and can be easily seen and not fouled. The dink ends up about even with the cockpit so is also easily seen. Works the same with a partner or single handing.
