Has anyone ever tried Coppercoat bottom paint ? Almost sounds too good to be true. Actually, make that way to good to be true .

But I guess if you amortise it over ten yrs or more...

Not that high priiced

It's not that high priced when compared to Trinidad. Recommended for my boat is 1120 bucks. It takes about 750 for me to apply two coats of Trinidad, with a third at the waterliine. I usually get three years from Trinidad. The last bottom job I did I used Super Ship Bottom, which they claim to be good for three years. At 149 per gallon, it's a bargain if it does that. So far a little over a year, and doing fine. Now if I could just keep the prop clean.

Well, it's not paint, it's epoxy that you stir a boat load of ground copper into at time of application. You have to do it in small batches as you have to factor in the working time before the epoxy kicks and gets too thick to roll on. I think they say you should only mix as much as you can apply in 30 to 45 minutes. The down side is that it was about $400 a gallon last time I checked, and you have to completly take your bottom down to bare gelcoat to get a good application, and this might be more prep time and cost. The up side is that it also works as a barrier coat, since it's epoxy.

Just a question here. What happens if they pass the laws to outlaw copper bottom paint in your region (like Washington State).

I thought that everyone had to have copper out of their paint by 2018 up there. That is only going to give us 5 years on a 10 year paint!!!! ?

I know several people that use Coppercoat and the LOVE it.

Just gotta be OK with the green patina color it turns.

Steve, the WA ban is on the RETAIL SALE of the paint. Application and use are legal. You could in theory by a lifetime supply and be legal. Or buy it in Oregon.

Well, it sort of is a lifetime supply, because although they claim a 10 year life, there are reports of 15 year protection. But that's as long as it's been around, so who knows how long it might last.

I wonder if the law specifically bans paints, or in fact all copper bearing products? Because again, it's not paint, anymore then West System epoxy would be considered paint. And in the event that they did consider it paint, you could still make your own by buying 50 lbs of copper dust and mixing it into your own epoxy and applying it.

It still doesn't protect you from slime though. Only hard marine growth.
