fwiw, when sailing well offshore, like coming back from Bahamas, I've turned on the mast head light.

While not its not legally correct, it was a great help to see our buddy boat, and allowed us to better judge distances much better than the stern light. (which was only seen intermittently between waves. and at distances less than a mile).

With the mast head light we could see the buddy boat about 3-5 miles away. (they had 9' more water line)


I also figured a container ship would see that mast head light many miles sooner. (and would know nobody is anchored in the gulf stream)

but I wouldn't do that less than 3 miles offshore.
