I need to make a template for a fairly tight area with a few cutouts. I was going to use shipping paper (brown) but was hoping with all the knowledge on this forum there would be a better material for my application. My project needs to be very accurate, and working with paper will suck.
For this project It has to be flexible. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure how large is your template, but I use plastic sheet from Tap Plastic, $ 7.35 for 2X4 feet. Easily cut with scissors and use permanant marker to draw.

I do templating all the time and use cardboard strips. Hot glue strips to the surface parameter, reinforce all joints with cross supports. Details can be cut into small strips and glued to parameter strips. Once complete, the entire template can be removed using a putty knife. Very accurate and easy.

how about painting the face with an anti-seize or gasket compound, placing some light gasket material against it, then remove and cut your pattern? Wipe the face clean and put in your new gasket.

That may be what I have here, a "For Sale" sign from the hardware store. Thin plastic in a number of sizes.
