Steve: When I was shopping for a boat, I became interested in the Tempest after seeing one for sale in a yard. I had never heard of it before. In addition to the Unofficial O'Day Website that you were referred to in a reply here, check out the Owner's association section of www.goodoldboat.com. They have a contact name for the Tempest, who's name escapes me at the moment. I had contacted him about the Tempest, and he was very helpful in providing info and advice. I looked at several Tempests during my search. All were in less than stellar shape. Be aware that O'Day (or Bangor Punta, or whoever) stopped making these boats before certain features became commonplace, so chances are you will have to do without bow or stern pulpits (let alone lifelines), an anchor locker, and your outboard engine will always be in the water in its well. Also, it seems that the boats were routinely outfitted with marine toilets which were piped to discharge directly overboard; obviously, you would have to fix that if it hasn't already been done. The cabin is really small, and is really only useful for roughing it camping cruising or for the kids to nap in. On the plus side, the owner's I spoke with all told me the same things about the boat itself: the Tempest is built like a tank, is fast and stays on her feet in strong winds. The flip side of the small cabin is that the cockpit is really huge. Also, you can probably get one for about $3000. If you are willing to put in the time and/or money to bring an older boat up to modern standards, the Tempest seemed to me to be a great daysailer for areas with a lot of wind.
