Temperature warning buzzer

Apparently the former owners of my H-27 that I just bought , had replaced the temperature warning buzzer on the panel where my starter key is located , with an engine hour log meter. Of course since I had no warning, on the day I took posession of the boat, I cooked the engine after a cooling hose blew. I now need a warning buzzer for my rebuilt engine so I don't repeat my accident. Not being electronically gifted , I am trying to figure out how to add the buzzer (anywhere is fine) in addition to the warning light already on the panel CORRECTLY . Can I splice into the temperature sensor wire coming from the engine to the panel & connect it also to a buzzer? I need specific directions , not generic if possible. Is the signal that the sensor sends to the light , the same signal that would energize the warning buzzer? Thanks, Joe

Check the Manual

Joe, I was just reading this in my engine manual this weekend. The buzzer is used by the charge (electrical), oil and water (temperature) system of the motor. I don't think you splice into each sensor. Check the owner's manual for the proper installation of the buzzer. It seems to me that it should only need to be plugged into one place to satisfy all three purposes and that the spot should be readily available to plug in to.

I also cooked my engine...

My h27 ('78) did not have any buzzer, just the idiot lights, and when I had a raw water pump failure, I went merrily along until I SMELLED the engine cooking... The problem is that one does not really notice those dinky lights down there on the panel in broad daylight (unless one occasionally looks - which I did not!). Any one see any problem with simply wiring in a 12-volt piezo buzzer from Radio Shack on the same +/- leads that connect to the idiot light?

Panel type

If you let me know what type of panel you have, "A" or "B" - and send me a fax number, I can fax you the wiring diagrams from the Yanmar manual and the Seloc Yanmar Manual. Doug s/v Brenda Gail
