What type of engine temperature warning device should a 1978 H-27 have, with the 8Hp Yanmar with the modified closed antifreeze system? I cooked my engine totally, on the first day I bought the boat. I had a 3 hour motor trip to get the boat to my marina, & after about an hour the engine stopped. Apparently a hose blew & I lost all the coolant. The head cracked & everything else inside was damaged also. If it every gets rebuilt (& we're not sure if it can be yet) then I want the proper gauges installed. Again , what do you have out there you are using to prevent an episode like this. Guages, warning beeps , etc. Thanks, Joe

Really best to have both.

Joe: I think that it's best to have both. I do not think that having a guage only in a boat is the best solution. The problem I see is that it is not like an automobile and the guage is not right in front of your face like an automobile. The guage is going to be down near the engine control panel. When you are busy watching traffic and trimming sails (when you are moto-sailing) you are not going to be looking at the guage. The buzzers on the Yanmars are very obnoxious and they work. You can just tee off the line were the buzzer sensor screws in and have both. This takes a little work but will be worth the effort. PS: this is a good time to think about re-powering to a larger engine too. Much easier to justify than when you have a working engine. Look in the HOW site for used engines.

Temp Guage for Yanmar Engine

I am not sure what guage you should use, but you may want to check with Torresen on the Web. They have really changed their Yanmar stuff and with all kinds of Yanmar parts. http://www.marinedieseldirect.com

Temp gage

I put a temp. gage in my 27'. I placed the temp gage in the space where the buzzer was. I put the buzzer behind the panel so it could still be heartd but I have the security of knowing exactly what the temp is... You will have to keep the sensor for the buzzer as well as the sending unit for the temp. gage so you can have both.

Temp. Gauge

I sympathize although I did not have a melt-down. I went to West Marine and bought a gauge off the shelf (make sure its marked for diesel) and a new sensor. After studying the wiring diagram and existing wires the installation was successful. I watch it often when motoring and hovers in the 100 degree range. Before that I was paranoid about observing the exhaust discharge flow.
