What would be involved in adding a temperature gauge to a yanmar 2qm15 I would like to keep the idiot light and buzzer but would like to add the gauge. Can I connect to the same sensor as the light?
Hey regbook
No you can not use one sensor for both. The gauge uses a sensor (variable resistance) and the idiot light uses a switch (makes a contact when it reaches a set temp).
Just a suggestion but you can have both a meter and an alarm running off one sensor if you use a digtial meter/gauge. I installed one on my 3QM30F engine a few years ago and it works great. I got a sender from Telflex - just check the thread size. I even used the original wiring from the engine to the idiot light and just hooked them up to the digital gauge. The idiot light still works for oil pressure and the alternator. The gauge has an adjustable over temp set point for the alarm and mine is set at 190 degrees. My engine runs at about 150 at idle and 160+ at 3,000 RPM. Slight increases in operating temperature usually mean some fouling of my engine intake or raw water filter.
