Temperature control valve

I am replacing my old Force 10 6 gallon 120 volt front heat exchange on 36 Hunter Visions sailboat. I am looking at buying a Kuuma 6 gallon in all most the same model. The old Force 10 has a temperature control value (don't think it was worked?) and I notice that the Kuuma does not. Does any on know if any other makers of marine water heaters have a temperature control value built into there system? Is there a good after market temperature control value available or something else that could regulate the temperature? Has anyone had problems with the water being to hot on board there boat after engine use? Do you no of anyone that has burnt themselves in this way? The old Force 10 has a temperature control value on PICTURE BELLOW. The Kuuma does not PICTURE BELLOW.

A standard off the shelf tempering or mixing valve will work. These valve blend cold water from the supply line with hot water from the tank to reach the desired temperature.

These valves are essential for HW tanks that have a heat exchanger because the water will reach the operating temperature of the motor, ~180° F, scalding hot. For electric only tanks, the thermostat can be set at a safe temperature, say 110° F.

My tempering valve (and one I saw in another thread here) are set at 38, so I assume C. That is 100.4 F. I can used the straight hot water in comfort, but there is a scond or two of hotter water at first, to be avoided. AS an aside, my home hot water can come out of the spigot STEAMING HOT, and I think that is making the clear plastic (tupperware-type) containers leach their chemicals. It ends up on most other items in the dishwasher, but not all types. One of these days I'll put a tempering valve on it :liar:

I doubt there would be any way you would not know whether that valve works if you have run the water soon after running the engine, if the engine heating is connected. Your tap or shower water temperature would be close to 180 degrees F and that is way hot enough to really burn you seriously.

You can buy a tempering valve from a plumbing supply store. I use a Honeywell model. Take care to get the right one. The suffix on the part number determines the connection types. I used threaded ones and then installed appropriate hose barbs. If you buy one at Home Depot it will probably come with copper sweat fittings. Try Supplyhouse.com on line for better selections and low prices.

marine water heaters have a temperature control value built into there system?
First, Welcome to the forum. Glad you found us and hope you are enjoying your Hunter.
Temp control as we know it from our land homes do not work when we use dual heat systems on a boat to heat the water.
At home you have one source be it gas to electric. The temp control limits the amount of time the gas or electric heat is applied to the water.

Your Marine water heaters use two sources. An electric heater while attached to shore power and the heat from the engine when running. By piping engine coolant through the water heater we tap the engine heat transferring it to the water in the water heater. Since the engine heat is uncontrolled a temp gauge cannot manage the heat source without a lot of sensors and additional plumbing.

Wise engineers figured it out. If you cannot manage the heat going into the water heater, let manage the heat coming out. They developed a simple mixing valve. It mixes the water from your cold water system with the water from the water heater to give you the perfect water temp and protect you and your loved ones from the scalding risk inside the water heater.

Talk with the supplier of your water heater. Ask them for a mixing valve.
You will again be a happy boater.
