I checked the archives but nothing about temp buzzer... today while still at the dock my temp alarm goes off while idling. temp was about 150. cleaned out the raw water strainer.temp dropped to 120; where it should be.had this problem before; out of the blue the engine would stop pumping water...checked the thermastat, impeller, strainer, one after another. she started pumping water and the buzzer would stop...this time the buzzer stays on and the temp gauge is reading normal...could it be a bad sending unit(sensor) or something else?? we still went sailing today, I just turn the key to 12 o'clock to kill the buzzer but would keep checking the temp gauge by turning the key to 3 o.clock. any help ??

If the gage reads OK

The there must be a malfunction in the buzzer circuit. The buzzer has its own over temp switch seperate from the sender for the gage. It could be a short in the circuit or the switch could be bad. To test the circuit just take the wire off the temp (buzzer) switch. If the buzzer still sounds the wires have a short. While the wire is off test the resistance between the terminal on the switch and the engine ground. You should not get a circuit if the engine is not overheated. Basicly the switch is normaly open and closes when the engine reaches an overheat temperature. Good luck

one thought to keep in mind

I had this problem on my '79 Hunter 30' YSM12. The problem turned out to be the rear cover seal on the water pump lost its prime. Polished the cover, turned it over and re-installed with prematex 2. It seems the impeller had worn a grove in the cover. I had also replaced the heat warning sender unit on the engine. Just a thought to keep in mind. Now I always check the water discharge when the engine is running. Ian
