They should have sent either a little pamplet or their catalog. Both show proper placement of tell tales. I'm sure if you call them they will forward both.

Hey Bill, Tell Tales should be placed at the end of each batten along the leech of the sail. Then place one on each side at about the belly or mid draft of the sail. How do you like Carlyle Lake? How is the sailing up there and what is the length of your sailing season.
Carlyle
I'm new to boat ownership, but have been around Carlyle sailing on and off (mostly off) since the early 70s. Its a good lake though a little small after a while. Good wind across the flat countryside surrounding the lake. Some care needs to be taken to avoid some of the shallow areas, but its not too bad. The favored boats usually have a more shallow draft in case the lake levels are dropped by the Corps. Sailing season runs from late April / early May through mid-October, sometimes a little later.

Bill: The mainsail telltales are placed at the batten end. Additionally, you can place one on each side of the mainsail at about the middle of the sail. You read those two the same way you as you read the ones on the jib. Some mates say the mast distrupts the air flow to thsoe two telltales and it does but not that much. On the jib - divide the luff in 3rd's. Once you find those spots just place one on each side about 12" back from the luff. Once you get them attached you have to learn how to read them. Telltales are absolutely the most important sail trim indicaters on a sailboat. Later this month, there will be telltale quiz presented by Gary W (the sailor who comes up with all the monthly topics). After that, I think I'll do a piece on the subject of how to read the telltales and what sail trim adjustments they are telling you to make. In the meantime, your most important mainsail telltale to watch is the top one (it indicates twist) and the most important Jib telltale is the middle one. The top jib telltale tells you something is wrong and the middle one give you the adjustment you need to make.

O'Day set-up / first time sailer
The O'Day 25 is a great boat as a starter or for the long-term. The O'Day area of sailboatowners.com can be a great help. Read the reviews and get an understanding of the vessel and its characteristics by reading to help you when you sail it. As far as sail set-up, its pretty straightforward. But if you're a first-timer, I'd get a friend to to help or hire seomeone to give you an orientation. I found the book "Sailing for Dummies" a nice starter reference, but I've sailed before. There are a few others that can be helpful. And taking a few lessons would probably be beneficial as well as getting the Coast Guard Auxilliary to go through a quick safety checklist.
