A stitch in time
I always backed up the stick on kind I used in the 70's with two stiches of serving twine through the sail and ribbon. I make my own now days from scaps of ripstop nylon and stitch them on the same way with coated polyester twine. Never lost one. Tip: seal the edges of the ripstop with a hot solder iron and they won't unravel, even in 30 knot winds.
