I had always hoped to move up to a diesel powered O'Day 28 from my current outboard powered O'Day 25. Earlier this month I saw answers to "Prop Size for 28" were 3 different owners were replacing their OE diesels. I thought Univeral and Yanmar diesel lived forever and ever. All three looked to be salt water applications. Is that the problem? I sail on fresh water, Lake Erie

Care should be taken

When you are shopping for your O'day 28, a very fine boat, do NOT let anyone talk you in to buying one with a sail drive OMC. The sail drive is OK but the OMC has it's problems. An O'day 28 with a diesel recently sold for $13,000 in my marina recently. An excellent value! I looked it over and the boat was in primo shape. It was a fresh water boat (Lake Huron) and was well tended, it apppeared.Dollar for dollar the salon of an O'day 28 is one of the best around. Lots of room, comfortable berth/settees and good head room (salon height).If you can find a fresh water O'day it would be a good thing. Good luck in your search.MikeS/B Pitterpat, Lake Huron

I Am Living Your Dream

Dennis, The wife and I sailed over 4,000 miles on our beloved O'25 that we owned for 6 years. I had the same idea as you about moving up to an O'28. We finally found one that fit the bill and could not be happier. She is a 1985 shoal draft model with the 10 horse Universal that drives her at hull speed in most conditions. Before we take off for extended cruising of the Intracostal in 2 years I will have the engine looked at by a professional, but I doubt that there will be anything other than maybe replace the injectors that will be necessary. I would do this all over again if I had to because the 28 is such a great boat. PM

4,000 miles in a O'Day 25

Paul,You are my idol. 4,000 miles in a O'Day 25. You should write a book. I too, do love my 25. Everyone moves up for more room, but I have second reason. I sail Lake Erie. In heavy weather the outboard caviates (if running) or swings back and forth on the engine mount (if not running). Pleae understand, the movement back and forth is very small, but when you are in heavy weather, you are watching everything. That movement DRIVES ME CRAZY!!! How did you handle this issue. Others Catalina's, Hunter's, etc.... have similiar motor mounts. Am I just being over cautious? My motor mount is the factory unit.
