I have installed an LCD screen HDTV in my Hunter 34 but need help in selecting an appropriate antenna. I have looked into the SHAKESPEARE ELECTRON Seawatch 2025 but can't tell if it will capture digital signals or not. I would like some advise. Gordon Brooks GBrooks@louisiana.edu

doesn't know the difference

An antenna doesn't know the difference bewteen digital and analog, more elements mean a better antenna gain db

TV Antenna

PO had installed a Seawatch 2010 on mast at the second spreaders on my H34. Can't answer your question on Digital, but reception and picture quality vs a pair of 3 dollar rabbit ears in the cabin is hardly measurable. I removed the Seawatch a couple of weeks ago 'cause I bought a new 135 Geneoa and sail chafe is suddenly a high priority.

Need digital receiver

I could be wrong but I thought most HDTV monitors require an additional sold separately digital receiver to receive digital content. With one, I would assume that any TV antenna would work. Monty

VHF versus UHF

The new digital signals are in the UHF range, and the older analog signals are in the VHF ranges (channels 2-13). The Shakespearer antenna covers both. I use the SeaWatch, hoisting it up with the main halyard when in port for the night. I had to modify the antenna slightly by installing an eye-hook to snap on the halyard. I also have a loop that attaches to the backstay to keep the antenna from banging onto the mast. In short, it works great. I am able to pull in signals with no problem, much better than any "rabbit ears". Ken Palmer, S/V Lady Brandon, 1990 H33.5 (Soon to be renamed)

Hinckley Antenna

Hinckley makes a circular antenna with no amplifier that mounts at the top of the mast. Its circular, has excellent gain and eliminates the fading I had with my older amplified West Maringe Antenna.

Good and Bad

I have a circular-disc shapped antena at the top of my mast (don't know the name of it) with a little red light on the bottom noticable at night. Sometimes the reception is as good as cable; sometimes it's worse than horrible. I can't fiqure out why!! I'm on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake if that's relevant. Anyone have any ideas??

Reception

We also have the circular with red light antenna. I believe it's called a UFO, or something like that. The quality of reception is influenced by line of sight. Also, if there is a lot of swell or rolling of the boat, then your picture will react. I found that if the boat is still, and no buildings are near, the reception is quite good. To Robert Polk, was your 'fading' antenna

mounted in the same place as the Hinkley antenna? Where can I buy a Hinkley?

Had the same problem with mine. It turns out that when the dealer installed mine during commissioning, they didn't use marine-grade coaxial cable. The cable pretty much disintegrated after about 18 months of use. Once I put in proper cable the problem was solved.
