We cranked up the engine, placed in forward gear and discovered a tear in the rubber boot and a significant leak. Can the boot be replaced afloat? The boot is fairly new and it seems to have torn somehow as we started the shaft. The tear is on the aft side under the hose clamp.

Haul and fix
In theory yes....but it is safer and better to haul and fix on the hard (in my opinion). The potentially longest part of the job is to remove the shaft from the coupling joining the transmission to the shaft. I replaced my stuffing box hose and to get the shaft off it took about 4 hrs to accomplish. If in the water, there will be signifant amounts of water potentially leaking in. Others have suggested using a wax toilet ring to mold around the stuffing box opening while in progress to impede the flow of water.
