Tropical Woods

I use a product called Poliulack from Brazil. After 2 years it still looks great. I cleand and applied two coats, very easy. My friend who told me about this product said that it is designed to use with most any Tropical Wood because it contains oils and UV inhibitors.

Varnish

I like the look of varnish on the bright work, I have tried other products but perfer the look of varnish and feel the results are worth the exta work.

I prefer Cetol...

...but if I had my way there would be no teak at all. Teak means work and extra work, at that. And the one thing I don't need is extra work.Eventually, I will replace all exterior teak with a non-wood product.Cheers,Bob

Bob I understand. That is why I went the TeaQua route, I wanted to spend a bit less time sanding, cetol, tropical, teak amazing in a can, whatever, for the last 30 plus years. I can't say enough good things about this. If you like the classic oiled look this is the stuff. I've heard over and over again how good it was but wasn't listening till this year. It is almost stupid easy to use, wipes up easy. People told me it was over a year before touching up. Everyone has a "magic formula" one part, two part, acids, preps, I was completely sick of all of it. The oiled look is my preference, I'm telling you this is simple to use and it looks beautiful. What convinced me was the endorsements on the website. There were also some pretty good questions and answers. Could always learn from it anyway. Starbrite dark Teak Sealer

I've usedit for 8-9 years. 1 -2 coats applied (after a little cleaning and light sanding) lasts all year. It always looks good. I stripped it off 1 time just to try it. I used the Starbrite Teak Sealer Cleaner/remover. Came off like butter. Rinsed, reapplied...the Best!

Armada

I have used Armada with great success. No sanding between coats very simular to Cetol. I have used Cetol and was not happy with the longevity. I swithched to Armada it has a richer color more natural look. I did five coats and have not touched it in two yrs and still look Great. If you shop, you can find it for about 23/qt

New drop boards

Last year I applied six coats of Epiphanes on my boards after prepping them pretty well. They looked terrific, but they have a slight warp to them and after 28 years show a little wear and tear. So I'm in the process of glueing some beautiful figured teak veneer to both sides of some marine plywood I have, and making new ones. The wood is so nice I won't mind taking the time to freshen up the finish every year.

Doors

Bob...when I bought my boat last spring, the PO had installed plexi doors in lieu of hatch boards. They are very thick, tinted, you can see through them, and, best of all, they require no refinishing. I am very glad to leave my hatch boards at home!

bristol finish

Four different sailors in my marina used Bristol on their teak in the last two years and all of them have had what I would say close to complete failures of the finish within months of application. Some have called the company and where told it was improper application. Most of them plan on going back to Cetal, teak oil or Armada. All of those guys where what I would detail oriented and probably did fallow the instructions to the letter.Just a comment.

I want to spend more time sailing.Call me lazy.I have a cleaning lady at my house once a week,I dont want to go a spend time re doing my boat every year.I use teak cleaner and then keep a bottle of teak oil in my boat so when Iam bored I re oil all the teak.I know it looks nicer with the varnish,but i want to spend my time sailing and with my family and not re doing my teak every year.

Bristol finish failure

Last winter I used the Bristol Product. Launched Mid June on Lake Michigan. Product was applied over winter in a heated building.By the time we arrived at Bayfield, Wi, the product was coming off the teak.Same story from Bristol...improper seal of deck and teak joint.May try it one more time.Buz Page

Why give Bristol another chance

Unless you truely believe that you did something wrong in your application process and you have alot of time on your hands, why would you consider giving Bristol another chance. I am one of the many sailors who has had problems with the Bristol finish. I changed to Bristol a few years ago because I wanted a more clear finish than I was getting with Honey Teak. In the years that I used Honey Teak it was always held up. It was a mistake to go to a product that was not proven and that now has a long history of problems and failures. The good news is that I just received my order of Honey Teak so I can begin finishing my bright work with something that holds up to the elements. It is more expensive; however, because of the work and time involved in refinishing, my primary concern is a product that will hold up to the elements and look great.

I found some further information about TeaQua Teak Treatmet Teak Treatment. Boating Life magazine posted a review on their website. Apparently they are very positive about it.
