Hunter 22 Lake Lanier, Ga
New owner to Hunter 22, looking for the best way to remove plugs in the cabin on the teak runners on either side of cabin. Would like to take off and refinish them. Any suggestions. Thanks Stewart

Leave well enugh alone <G>

Stewart, congratulations on your new Hunter 22. If your teak trim is tight and in good order, I suggest leaving well enough alone, and refinishing them as need be where they are. You'll spend a lot less time and have alot less aggravation refinishing them in place. Mask well, and refinish as necessary. Generally speaking I see so many boats where new owners have removed trim and fittings with good intention and enthusiasm, and some of it never gets put back. All the hours you'll spend trying to remove the bungs, refinish, and reinstall is time better spent sailing the boat. My .02 <G> Jim

3/8" forstner type drill bit in the center

I'd have to disagree with Jim, especially if you plan on varnishing. BTW when I put mine back on I used stainless finish washers so I can remove them at will without drilling and replugging every time, and they look great. Believe me, sanding, 2 coats of sealer, and at least 3 coats of varnish done in place would be nightmarish compared to simply taking them off.

Neat trick

If I understand correctly, you want to remove teak plugs to get at the underlying screws to remove the screws and remove the teak runners. The way the boat yard carpenters do it is to drill a small hole in the center of the plug and using a dry wall screw (with big teeth), screw into the pilot hole. When the screw hits the underlying screw, it will lift the teak plug right out without damaging the teak or the underlying screw. Don

In place wprked

Just sanded and put 4 coats of Cetol on all my teak. Masked it well and did it in place. Looks great and wasnt that much work.. even with boat in the water.

Did mine without removing

I sanded mine and sealed. Then finished with 2 coats of Poly without removing.
