Teak question

I'm sitting here watching it rain, the wind blow and the thunder booming. Boat is straining at her moorings, ready and wanting to go. Oh well, another day. In the meantime, have a question about interiors. Is there a reasonably easy way to lighten up the color of teak. I do not want to paint it, but would like to brighten up the inside as much as possible. Lots of dark teak in there, makes the interior dark. I am going to install a white headliner, and a floor lighter in color than the origional teak and holly. But what can I do with all the other teak in there. Is it possible to lighten it up some, other than just painting it. I like the look of nicely varnished wood, but would like it to be a few shades lighter if possible.

They make 'teak cleaners' that may lighten

the wood if it is dirty. To really lighten it a shade or two you would use a solution of bleach and water on the bare wood. Leave it on for a while (1/2 hour) and rinse off, repeat. If your wood is already slightly mottled (that is both dark and light in different sections) I think that the lighter sections would probably lighten the most giving you even more contrast. It might be helpful to try this on a scrap of teak first. Woodworkers will bleach wood to lighten it up. Good luck Nice N Easy.

Why not wait to finish your other

white headliner and new flooring before you start down this road? (A singlehanders approach to work-reudction...)

light finish

Since it is inside teak, you don't have to worry about it weathering. I would use the oxilic acid to clean the teak, then neutralize it with water. When dry, I would apply linseed oil. It is a light honey color, and really does a nice job. It does have to be applied often however. I use it for garden tool handles and apply it every year or two or as necessary. It will stain through however, so it may not be the best teak protectant for your teak table top.

boat

Note: Does he tell you how he acquired this boat? I don't think so. He used me to get what he wanted and then just left me holding the bag. Yes, I bought the boat and then he just leave me holding the bag. Not very nice, would you say? I thought this was the man I loved but he is a big time phony and I want to let all of you know this. He does not own a house, a boat or anything else for that matter. He just uses people like me to get what he wants, including me and his sister. Nor does he own a house on the canal, which his sister rents and he gulps up all the benefits. Yes, I bought the boat because I fell in love with this fool with all his lies and failure to commit and yes I am very bitter. Just wanted to let all of you know what this person, not a man is really like. I am a widow who he took advantage of and yes I have many regrets.

Lighten and clean old teak

I used Olympic "Deck Cleaner" on my outside teak that was weathered, gray and dirty. It works without rubbing in about ten minutes. It's biodegradable, washes off with water. Actually no work at all and the end result was new clean teak. Then to protect the teak, recommend Dyco exterior stain. These guys are in Clearwater, FL and understand the sun and salt water. It is a water based stain that was easy to apply. I rubbed it on with a cloth rather than brush as it is easier of me to control the application. Dyco has a cleaner too which may work well, I just didn't use it. A link to the stain is given below. I know your question was for interior teak but, I used the gold stain on the teak hand-rails, trim, table, drink holder and main hatch boards and it is very light and looks great. The grain shows through and the 27 year old wood looks show room new. I am going to use it on my interior floor boards when I have time and the mood moves me to do it. (may use a light brown color rather than gold for the floor)

Teak

Teak is a funny wood and the colors can vary...a lot. I have seen some raw teak that is very blonde and others very dark. Most wood types seem to vary much less. What I have found is that most teak will lighten with a light sanding. You could try using a light stain like Golden oak on it afterwards and then a good coat of poly and it will look lighter. I used the spar polyurathane for a little extra UV protection even though it is inside the cabin as we get a decent amount of sunlight inside. It will really give the wood a warm rich look and it is pretty much mainaince free. We wipe it down with a little furniture polish. I will admit that sanding sucks but the results are well worth it..I will try and try to get some pics of my cabin to post. Good luck and stay dry

tagalong sounds like the man stole your heart just to acquire this boat he says is his....is it in your name? i'm sure there are a few honorable men who would love to help a fine southern lady take back what is truly hers. I have spent some time in Mobile and found the people there to be very genuine, honest and forthcoming. If you would drop me a line at lsd@dmtears.com I would love to discuss this more. There is nothing lower than a man or woman who would use the pretense of love for personal gain. Just don't judge all people by the actions of one scoundrel. nice and easy, do you care to reply to this lady...

Tagalong this is not the place

Tagalong this is not the place to be airing your problems with anyone. If you have an issue take it somewhere else, If you have a legit claim..take it to court but this is a sailing forum not a love line. It looks like you have a friend in Ellis and since he is unregistered I have to wonder about his motives on here. Perhaps you two could take it offline and keep the rest of us out of it

I am registered...I do not know why my name is not coming up as so in the forums, but you can check it in the owner registry. Yes, I am a friend of tagalongs, I am a friend to all the oppressed and downtrodden....All of those who can't fight for themselves and need a friend. I came to the aid of Jeff and will come to the aid of all those who are unjustly attacked by the few posters who seem to think they are the rule and policy makers on this forum.... ellis.

I believe I straightened out my log in so William does not have to worry about my motives here...as if that has anything to do with it.
