Teak oil: does it stain the deck?

I've done that before. Whatever you do, don't use any cleaners with acid that can eat out the caulking under your deck fittings or even the gunwale strip. That's where I made my big mistake years ago.
I read in one of those handy hints books about using a common household cleanser like "Zud Cleanser" which contains Oxalic Acid to clean the stains out of fiberglass. It worked great, but what they didn't tell me was the fact that this stuff will eat out caulking! All it took was to run the hose over the deck to rinse the stuff off and I started getting leaks inside my cabin that was coming through from under that gunwale strip. I pass this info on to you so you don't travel down that same road and create more problems than you had. For me it's a case of "been there, done that."

I wipe up as soon as possible and then wipe with acetone and then rinse with with water. Left on for long, it won't come off. Mask the surrounding area before using
Clean with acetone then use a lower grit wet sandpaper to take it off. Start with wet 600. Then work ur way up too 2000. Finish off with some rubbing compound then your protectant of choice. This is of course for gelcoat. One reason I don't like boat paint.gabriel.donnelly said:
